Pig Stick comes in Many Colors

Pig Stick is a term we have given to what happelipstick on a pigns when someone tries....and does a half hearted job,...to put "lipstick on a pig in updating, remodeling, redecorating. " The end result can be worse than if the homeowner did nothing at all.

Sometimes minor changes can "refresh" a room...and other times...not soooo much. Changing the hardware on cabinetry can be an effective update...a new style..or finish or color. If the cabinetry is old and wood not in good condition...the hardware change won't help...it's Pig Stick.

If you re-paint the living room....and leave sculptured carpet....or don't refinish the wood floors...you have Pig Stick.

The bathroom was "updated" with new faucets but the circa 1970 tile covers the walls..and the floor is a sheet vinyl that likely was there before 1970...with rugs "covering" the spots that are most discolored/worn...Pig Stick.

pig stick  Changing drawer pulls and handles from shiny brass to oiled bronze...and leaving the shiny brass hinges...it's Pig Stick.

Painting paneling that may or may not be real wood rather than replacing it with drywall...is easier...and you get...Pig Stick.

If you are doing updating ...for yourself...OR...to get your home ready to sell...ask a Professional that has experience with updating...anything worth doing is worth doing well...half doing anything or doing it least expensively is not always the best remedy.

We called it putting lipstick on a pig. ....as a professional home stager. It is about doing the right thing -- ROI is important as well. Now I have another new saying. Thanks

Great tips. It's easy to spot these pig sticks. It's not worth the work and it still costs money.

Recommendation to sellers gone wrong! Not seeing the bigger picture or whole room is a huge mistake that can cost the seller losing their equity. Thanks for pointing these out. Agents if you see them, ans are not sure how to handle, call a professional stager to help you out.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson That's a great way of describing it!  I've never heard of pig stick before, but I won't forget it and will probably use it.  I see this all the time.  Old kitchen cabinets, old appliances and they throw on a piece of granite - then the listing reads - granite kitchen.

Some things should be done well & updating & paying attention to detail is one of them. Too many homes I go into say 'good enough' & that's not true. The attitude shows ...

Some sellers know nothing about cosmetics. They should really consult the pros. When I saw your term "pig stick" I knew exactly what you meant; just another term for lipstick on a pig. ANother reason why some sellers really should see what updating is all about and look at cmas and bpos very closely with their listing agents before putting their property on the market.  Having that facelift and nip and tuck on the lawn will do wonders for the property. Loved the post!

I've used the lipstick on a pig analogy many times.  You did a great job here specifically stating examples!  So happy to see this Featured!

I don't even bother to explain, I just deduct the cost from my initial estimate and adjust the price to accommodate. Sellers think all sorts of things, and there is no point in telling them they have lousy tastes and their father smells like elderberries, regardless of how true it is.

Excellent post, Sally & David.  I agree with Theresa Akin's comment of Corpus Christi Realty Group, "Some sellers know nothing about cosmetics."  They should really consult the pros."

I've never heard of the "pig stick" term before, but I will definitely start using it!  Thanks again for sharing this great post.

I sure haven't heard this expression before, although I have heard about putting lipstick on a pig. I suspect there are plenty of homeowners who, without thinking about it, create pig stick. Between your graphics and the description, I suspect I will never forget this...it could come in handy!

Love it!  We totally need a term for that phenomenon and "Pigstick" is perfect!    ( I got here via the link in Roy Kelley's  reblog of Sally K. & David L. Hanson's blog about countertops -- and I'm glad I did!)

Sally and David - There are a ton of homes in my area that think Pig Stick will help them sell. Most of the time when I enter the home, I wonder, "Why did they do that, and why didn't they do that?"

More often than not it makes the home look worse.
