No, that's not today's weather forecast...that is a description of how long the tag clouds of Lenn Harley and mine are...combined!!!

For some time now I have been ruing, stewing, and chronically complaining about the extremely long 'tag cloud' which I have generated through my blogging activities here on Active Rain! I even went so far as to obtain a 'print out' of the 'tag cloud' in an attempt to get a 'handle' on it and consolidate it into maybe just a dozen or so categories. This activity even depressed me more...The only solace I took was that the first lady of Active Rain, Lenn Harley, had a tag cloud that was almost as long as mine if not longer!

Just so I don't lose anyone here...a 'tag cloud' is composed of all the 'key words' we identify and apply on our blog posts...'tags', I understand, aid Google and us in producing 'Google Juice'...that's the extent of my technical knowledge on the subject...All I know is I keep blogging, tagging my posts, and somehow 'Google' makes 'Google Juice' from that process... with 'Google Juice' you become very 'searchable' on the internet...so someone doing a 'Google search' is more apt to stumble upon YOU!!! Now you know as much as I do about SEO, Google Juice, and Internet search engines...

Anyhow, I was thinking that if Lenn and I combined our 'clouds' we could conceivably cause one heck of a 'Rain Storm' on Active Rain...in fact, it might be Lenn and I who have contributed most to AR's recent 'traffic jammed' servers!!!

So I decided to do a little investigating of my own on this topic...you can check this out yourself...go to any blog on AR, look in the rightmost column under the profile pic and 'links' section and you'll find each members 'tag cloud'...it will give you an 'at a glance' look as to what tag words are being placed on that blogger's posts...my detective work corroborated my suspicions...holy cow, if I combined the 'tag clouds' of Todd Clark, Jason Crouch, and Rich Jacobson, just to name a few, with mine and Lenn's, we could generate enough rain to end all droughts everywhere on 'earth'!

Now, why am I writing this post?

Well, I was hoping that some guru or AR god would have a solution...an easy one, mind you...for Lenn and I to take advantage of to remedy our 'weather' problem!!! Mind you, I haven't discussed any of this with Lenn...but I would be willing to assist her with any advice I might derive from this post, and gladly pass it on...in fact what would be really nice would be if an AR god or goddess would come up with an easy 'fix' to this dilemma...some electronic method of solving the problem effortlessly!!!

Active Rain...I'm waiting and listening...are you out there???

Hoy cow! I've got a long list too. But then again my knowledge of SEO and keywords is quite limited.

Yikes, Fran.  My cloud is as big as yours and I only have 119 posts to your 361!  Let us in on the secret when you find it!

Andrew: LOL, I can't even explain 'blogging' very well!!!

Nancy: Yeah, where are all those techie nerds when you need them...:) I'll keep you posted!

I started cleaning up my tag cloud - and found a million things that I would rather do!  However, it does need to be continued.  I have to be more disciplined in the future, because it was OUT OF CONTROL.  Still is - but less so.

Ruthmarie,

I would like some 'AR angel' to clean up my tag cloud!!! Thanks,   Fran

P.S. Angels work in clouds; humans work on earth!!! :)

Dang Fran, I have 20 tags already and have only been here 2 months! What are we going to do? BTW your page took 4-ever to load do you think it is because of your thousand mile long tag cloud?  LOL!!

Lori,

Thanks for telling me about the load time...I suspect it's my large baseball photo, but again I don't have a clue about these things...if the AR gods are listening, do I have to become a computer programmer to be a good blogger???????? Thanks,   Fran

Fran, I started cleaning and consolodating mine and gave up. I write about too many different things, so it is what it is, so far it hasn't hurt me in Google.

Missy,

In light of your comment, I kinda like the 'tag list'...it's like a book index, where posts and topics can be easily found...I guess I just don't like the room it takes up!!! Thanks,   Fran

Love your blogs new look.

Karen George wrote an excellent post on tags.  I tried to find it but she has written so many.  After reading her post I went back, thankfully I only had 80 posts at the time, and redid my tags so I would be down to what I considered a manageable number. When I write a post, I open another window with my blog so I can read my tags and I try to only use the tags I already have established unless I truly feel another is in order.  I'll tell you what I like about it.  You can click on the tag and it brings up a page with all those posts, then you can put that link in emails or wherever it's applicable and your reader can click on the link and find ALL your posts on that subject.  I always put a link to all my market reports in everything I email.  It's a pretty cool tool.

I'm ALWAYS here, Fran! Although I have to say that Wrigley would be a much better choice of backgrounds! What exactly are you wanting to do with your Rain Cloud?

04/28/2008 12:06 AM by Rich Jacobson ~ ActiveRain Community Builder (ActiveRain Corporation)

Fran: I tremember reading Karen's post on the subject!!! :)

Rich: Do I need to worry about reducing the size down, or like Missy suggested, the heck with it???

Thanks,   Fran

You bring up a good point Fran.  I think it goes hand in hand with my blog topics though.  If my goal is to dominate a particular keyword or keywords, I need to focus in on those.  Instead of homes for sale it should be Fairbanks homes for sale, I think.  That said, I could be totally off base.  Surely there are brighter minds who can shed some light on the issue.

Jesse,

I intended this post to be an APB for those 'brighter minds'!!! Hello, out there!!! Thanks,   Fran

Greg,

If I was just starting like you, I would do exactly what you're doing...pick your key words and try to stick with them!!! Thanks,   Fran

My tag cloud could be condensed, to say the least.  Then again, if somebody types in 'Pigeon-Toed Monkey Burp' I'm bound to come up numero uno in Google;-)

Jason,

You cover all the angles, don't you!!! LOL Thanks,   Fran

P.S. I'll 'bet' you bet on long shots at the track too!!!
