How to Stage a Garage- and YES, It Does Matter.

Home Stage Tip-How To Stage a Garage
As a Home Stager, I’ve heard both sides of the “does it or does it not matter” discussion of whether or not the condition of the garage matters.
However, what we do… staging...is meant to show all of the possibilities of the home as well as the space.
And last I looked, the garage IS part of the house!
During some of my consultations, I’ve heard agent and friends tell sellers to just put everything...boxes, chairs, toys, extra art, etc. in the garage.
I would encourage you not to.
Buyers have to be able to see that a 2 car garage indeed can hold 2 cars.
I’ve seen stuffed 2 car garages that were questionable as to whether they could even hold one car.
This is Florida… there are NO basements.
Storage space is even more important when there are no basements. If buyers see that you’ve had to shove everything you own in the garage, it will occur to them that you are lacking in extra space!
How to stage a garage…
1.Start packing.
Now is the time to toss those chemicals and cleaning supplies that you no longer use. Make sure to check with your local waste management for proper disposal.
Paint cans full of tools and nails, tennis racquets that have been waiting to be restrung for years, boxes of Christmas decorations that you no longer use, the list goes on.
Why haul the items that you no longer use or want to your new home?
2.Hang it up!
If you can, find a way to hang up what you’re left with after editing all of your stuff.
Use peg boards and hooks, shelving and bins.
3.Sweep!
Hello...this is part of your home. Sweep the floors, and look up and use that broom to get the spiderwebs.
And while you’re at it, remove those oil stains on the floor.
4. Paint the floor after you’ve cleaned and degreased it.
Just as you’ve been told to give your house a fresh coat of paint when you are selling it, the same could go for your garage. And don’t just stop with the floors.
Clean your walls and then if you can, paint them.
I had one homeowner who went on to add baseboards to his freshly painted garage!
5.Organize it
Once you’ve edited, cleaned and hung up your tools, organize what’s left. Invest in plastic bins to put on shelves. Hang up the bicycles, arrange mowers and edgers neatly. (make sure they’re clean!)
6.If you must….
If you have just a few boxes that need to be stored, then stack them in a corner. Anything more than that needs to be stored. You can invest in storage units that rent on a monthly basis. Isn’t this worth it to help get your home sold?
