… Most of the Time.
It’s been a bit of a crazy day today in terms of business with lots of details to follow up in many different directions. I’ve had multiple calls today that were out of the blue… the unrealistic buyer who is under the misconception that a low credit score is enough to get a mortgage, so you carefully and respectfully inform them of a realistic picture… the prospective buyer who wants the Taj Mahal complete with a finished basement and a fenced yard for about $50,000… the buyer who wants more information about “that house that I just drove by. You know the one. On the corner? White? With a fence?” (as if I am a mind reader and knew what part of town he was in at the time). After a series of these, I got a few of the sales calls that just left me shaking my head.
Being in sales myself, I try to give them a break and be patient when I can be but, sheesh, a few of these today tried my patience.
One called stating that he could improve my online presence. Like the countless calls we get as REALTORS, what he has to offer is better, brighter, faster, stronger… something vastly superior to anything else I’ve heard about. I told him, No thanks, Not interested. He continued. So I said that though I appreciate that he’s in sales, as am I, that I’m truly not interested. And, that if he needs to hear three “no’s” before he’s allowed to let me off the phone, then here they are: No, No, and No. He droned on, so I said, “I gave you a chance to end this. Now this is me ending the call,” and I hung up.
Not five minutes later, there’s another call. This time from Texas. The woman on the phone was calling selling ads on behalf of a high school that’s about five minutes from my office… in Delaware. I said, “But you’re in Texas.” She laughed. “Why, yes, I am.” I told her that I support local schools when a student that attends the school directly asks me, so that I know it supports them. She said, But this DOES support the school. I almost had to repeat the “3 no’s” approach but she conceded and we parted ways.
In the midst of all of it, I remind myself that they’re all earning a living, that I need to answer the phone because my legitimate clients do find me on it, even some of them from far away, and that it’s the fact that each day is full of new things that’s part of what intrigues me about this business.
But honestly right now? I’m tired. Time to call it a day.
Oh wait… is that my phone ringing again?
