We just finished with an ActiveRain challenge from Bob Crane who hosted the second April ActiveRain "100 Day Checkup, and April SEO Super Charge Challenge" Challenge. Bob challenged us "To write a post on how you are doing, how you are keeping up with your 2016 Goals, and where you need to make adjustments." Bob's "2016 - 100 Day Checkup, and April SEO Super Charge Challenge" was very timely for more than one reason. But the biggest reason it was timely for me to look back on the first 100 days in 2016, is because it also served as a reminder that Establishing Goals Is Not Good Enough, You HAVE To Follow Through.
Goals are something every sales person needs to have. Whether they are written down in a Business Plan or not, we all need to have an idea of what we want to accomplish for ourselves and our careers.
The purpose of this blog is not to preach the right or wrong of a formally written Business Plan. Nor is this blog about whether goals can be accomplished or not if they are not written down. However, both of these approaches have a common pitfall which is when we set a goal we also have to make at the same time a commitment to follow through with it. Goals should not just be numbers and ideas on paper or in our minds. Goals should be a promise to ourselves we will do everything possible to make them a reality. Just deciding to do something and doing it are two very different things.
I hear sales people often say they have decided to implement a new program, do a newsletter, make more sales calls, or any other number of things to improve their business. However, many times I find the decision was made with a good intention, but the goal was not accomplished. This makes it very clear to me that "Deciding" and "Doing" are very different.
I view the "Deciding" as the "want to", and the "Doing" as the "follow through" and "accomplishing". Just because we want to do, does not mean we will make the commitment to follow through and accomplish. Following through not only requires commitment, it also requires constancy, and not giving up until the "want to" is accomplished.
So for those who have or are in the process of looking back on your first 100 day of the year, I hope you will also question why you did or did not accomplish what you wanted in those first 100 days. When you set your goals did you make the commitment to take them from a "want to" to "follow through".
Establishing Goals Is Not Good Enough, You HAVE To Follow Through! If we make that commitment, then we have a great chance to accomplishing our goals for 2016. If we are going to set goals, let us commit to FINISH them as well.
