Five Tips for Planting a Garden and Improving Curb Appeal

If you have been thinking about getting out there and planting a garden, now is the time of year! I have noticed my Facebook feed filling up with pictures of new gardens and flowers. Gardening is a fun outdoor activity. It can be a fun for the whole family, a great stress reliever and the perfect way to spruce up your outdoor space. Here are 5 Tips for starting a Garden:

1.) Create a Plan: Where are you going to plant your garden? Front or back yard, or both? How many gardens are you going to plant? What kind of plants do you want in them? Some ideas are flowers, bushes, shrubs, trees, fruits or vegetables. Are you going to start with seeds or buy the plants? Are you going to plant in the ground, use flower boxes or plant in pots?

2.) Call before you dig: Missouri law requires anyone planting a garden to call Missouri One Call at least 3 days before digging. They will mark your property so that you know where you can safely dig. This is a free service! For more information visit their website: Missouri One Call .

3.) Set a Budget: It is easy to go crazy when you get to the Nursery or Home Improvement store. With so many options, you may want to buy them all. It is important to set a budget of how much you want to spend on your garden. Remember you may need to plan for plants, bricks, stone or wood to surround your garden, tools, soil and mulch.

4.) How does the sun shine?: Pay attention to how the sun shines on your property through-out the day. Some plants need full sun, while others need partial sun.

5.) Pay attention to the tag: On the back of the tag there are directions for how to plant your item. This can include how much sun the plant needs, how deep to plant it, and how close to other plants it can be.

 Why is Curb Appeal Important?

Think of Curb Appeal as your Home's First Impression. This is especially important if you are planning on listing your home. If you list your home,  you will most likely have a For Sale Sign in front of it. This is one way that potential buyers will know your home is for sale and be able to contact your Real Estate Agent. You will want the outside of your home to look its best so that the buyer will want to see what is inside. I have shown homes before where the buyer scheduled an appointment, and decided not to go inside after seeing the front of the house. So, curb appeal is important!

What to Consider when thinking about Curb Appeal

Improving Curb Appeal can be simple and free or you can spend some time and some money to really spruce things up. Whatever you do, make sure you make a plan of how much money you want to spend. It is important not to spend so much that you won't get your money back when selling your house. You may want to contact a local Real Estate Agent to find out what your home is worth. Plan out how long these improvements will take so that you have enough time to complete them before listing your home.

Five Common Ways to Improve Curb Appeal:

1.) Trim existing bushes and trees or plant new ones.

2.) Wash windows

3.) Paint the Front Door

4.) Wash the Exterior or the House

5.) Put down new mulch or grass seed.
