I learned it the hard way. Well actually skinning my knees and stumbling through problems was the easy part, it was the leasons that were hard earned.
I receieve a call from an old collegue that needed some advice. During the conversation she gave me some very high praise and thanked me for trying to help her back in the day. She told me you just know everything and you always took the time to help me. Well I certainly don't know everything but am never afraid to ask someone that does. I hope that I am never too busy to help someone better themselves or get past a hurdle. If someone can take a lesson on something I scrapped my knees on I consider it a huge success. I have been doing real estate for 3 decades and no matter how good you are at something, you can always become better. There will never be a time that I can't learn a new trick, even from someone just learning for themselves.
Have you ever noticed that we always spend far more time congratulating people who have succeeded than encouraging people who have not.
It doesn't matter if it is a friend or a stranger we dont even have to like the person to come up with a clap or praise to congratulate them for a success. Our nature makes us a little less generous when helping a collegue get a bigger slice of the pie for fear that we will wind up with less. The truth is giving to someone else always gives you a much bigger pie to serve from. I think some of the biggest richness that I have gotten in my life, came from people that had nothing, except perhaps a good dollop of compassion and a strong need or want to help another human being.
Take time to share a piece of your pie and enjoy your desert all the more.
