Being in a vehicle when a tornado hits can be a terrifying
experience...First you should recognize the warning signs
that there is a possibility that a tornado could strike the area soon.
These warning signs include:
1) Strong rotation of clouds
2) Swirling debris at ground level...not all tornadoes have
a funnel
3) Hail or heavy rain followed by an eerie calmness or
rapid wind shift.
4) Loud, continuous rumble that doesn't fade quickly like
thunder during a storm
5) Bright blue/green to white flashes at ground level of
light can mean snapped power lines
What do you do if you are in the car/truck during this time?
Vehichles are extremely risky during a tornado. One option is to try to drive out of its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. While this is recommended by experts, it may be extremely difficult to do under stormy circumstances. Alternative actions can include seeking shelter in a sturdy building...optimally underground.
Stay in the car with your head as protected as possible and below the level of the windows. Keep your seat belt fastened. If you can get out of the car and be lower than the roadway, not under a bridge, seek shelter in that place.
We hope none of these warnings and cautions are ever necessary...as we approach this stormy season across the country...knowing where to go and how to handle the situation can be life saving.
Wishing you shelter from every storm...Sally & David Hanson.
