This is the season for storms across the country...no state is immune from the showers that become storms and can weave paths of destruction through areas miles wide...take down buildings...flip cars...destroy the landscape. It is our intention from this mini series to keep you safe from this destructive path by being aware of the signs of a tornado and knowing what to do wherever you are when one strikes. Here is another blog of value to people who may find themselves in the path of a storm.
For areas of the country that are frequented by these storms, you may consider researching a "family safe" which is a container that withstand tremendous force and can be put inside of a home or attached garage. Most people will not find the need to go to this length and welcome knowing what they can do in their own homes to be protected when a storm strikes.
Much like the fire drill that you should have practiced...all family members knowing how to exit the house when fire may break out in different rooms...a Storm Safe plan is also something every family should have in the front of their memory banks during this season.
1) Choose a room in your home - basement, storm cellar on the lowest
floor in an area without windows.
2) Have a weather radio or other broadcast news available to stay informed
of current conditions.
3) Have a well stocked first aid kit and working fire extinguisher that has
been regularly inspected in the room. Be sure every family member is
well versed in basic first aid and how to use a fire extinguisher.
4) Learn where to turn off water, gas and electricity.
The last blog in this series will give you a list of things to include in your emergency storm kit that will be in your "safe room."
Stay safe....be prepared....it is the season to be pro-active in storm awareness and be a good scout ...Be Prepared !
