Today so many San Franciscans are finding a new home in Temescal. And no wonder. Temescal, with its gritty, urban, artsy feeling, has the sun, close-knit neighborhoods, and a faster connection to downtown San Francisco than most places in San Francisco.
On Manila Avenue, one of Temescal’s close knit streets, you’ll find one of the first houses built in Temescal in 1907: 4154 Manila. While most Temescal homes have gone through 100 years of changes, 4154 Manila has remained remarkably intact. It’s now been restored to its former glory with all the requisite details that define “character.” A large living room with Craftsman clinker brick fireplace opens to a grand dining room with box beam ceiling, wainscoting, and built-ins with leaded glass.
You can feel the work of a Craftsman throughout. There is original woodwork in all the rooms, including the three bedrooms and the large kitchen and bathroom, which have been classically updated, still with their original charm.
In the backyard, there’s a redwood deck and large patio for barbecues and entertaining. A full basement can be used as an office and man or woman cave … plus a wine cellar.
The urban, close knit vibe is very much alive. Within a couple blocks, there are over 100 restaurants and coffee shops, from HomeRoom to Burma SuperStar to Korean barbecue. And, of course, Genova Delicatessen. And seven blocks away, there’s BART … and a short 15 minutes to downtown SF.
