In spite of rain forecasts, the outdoor family event at The Great Hollow Nature Preserve
is scheduled to take place on
Sunday, May 1st 2016
12:00pm - 3:00pm
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful nature preserve on the New Fairfield/Sherman border in Connecticut. On Sunday, May 1st 2016 The Great Hollow Nature Preserve will have its opening day to welcome the public and to launch a new chapter under new ownership.
Thankfully, the new owners intend to return the
ecologically-rich and varied 825 acres of this very special property back to its originally-intended status of remaining a nature preserve to be used as a community resource for scientific research and education. When the Regional YMCA, after operated the property for a good number of years, put it up for sale, the locals feared that some legal loophole might be found that would allow this land treasure to be developed into condo’s or something else commercial.
The Great Hollow Nature Preserve offers six miles of hiking trails, wetlands, multiple streams and brooks, including Quaker Brook, known for its native trout. Many varieties of animals have been cited on the property, from turtles to bears and even bob cats.
The original Merritt house (great antique home with guest rooms and large conference rooms for events/meetings) and the barns will be open for activities; there will be live music to welcome guests, guided hikes, some demonstrations and a barbecue, all FREE.
For more information, please visit The Great Hollow Nature Preserve website. Make sure to take a quick look at the rules, e.g. no dogs, even on a leash and ignore the rain date - event happening on MAY 1st, rain or shine.
