Adopt A Shelter Pet Today In Charlotte, NC/Where To Adopt In Charlotte

By

National Adopt A Shelter Pet DayApril 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day.  Today is a great day to adopt a shelter pet in Charlotte, North Carolina (or anywhere else for that matter). There are millions of homeless dogs and cats housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area, as well as all around the country.

It's estimated that over 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. But that's on top of some 3-4 million that are euthanized each year! And there are some estimates that say there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! Here are a few more statistics:

  • Only 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues.

  • Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

These statistics are simply staggering! So on National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day, I'd like to provide some information on where, if you are as staggered by these statistics as I am, you can go to adopt a shelter dog or cat in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area.

And here's a picture of my boy, Oliver, who was a shelter cat adopted from the Humane Society of York County. How handsome is he? (And very smart, too!)

I would have kittens by the dozen and be one of those crazy old ladies in a rocking chair laughing while they would be my home entertainment center and doing their kittenish tricks...my roommates....both 2 and 4 footed would not welcome that !

Sheila Anderson ~ hi Sheila, just think how great it would be to relieve shelters of "residents" if just half a million American adopted a pet today.

The best cats are rescue cats!

Last week we laid our 18-year old black cat to rest... Henry was a dumpster cat, we took him and his brother in when they were barely weaned.  Henry lived a cat's life; he was a true yard cat.  Henry climbed trees, he brought us gifts (birds, mice, squirrels).  He never wore a flea collar, he never used a sandbox. When we lived at the mountain house for six months, Henry would drink water from the stream (Buck Creek).

Henry was the King of the pride; he ruled the neighborhood. Today Henry rests in the shade of the trees, about a hundred yards from our house.

Fred Griffin ~ good morning, Fred. You are so right about rescue pets. All of our cats and dogs have been rescues and they are the best.

So sorry to hear about Henry... I've buried my share of beloved, old cats and it's never easy. You wrote so movingly about Henry I felt like I knew him, myself.
