April 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day. Today is a great day to adopt a shelter pet in Charlotte, North Carolina (or anywhere else for that matter). There are millions of homeless dogs and cats housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area, as well as all around the country.
It's estimated that over 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. But that's on top of some 3-4 million that are euthanized each year! And there are some estimates that say there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! Here are a few more statistics:
-
Only 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues.
- Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

These statistics are simply staggering! So on National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day, I'd like to provide some information on where, if you are as staggered by these statistics as I am, you can go to adopt a shelter dog or cat in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area.

And here's a picture of my boy, Oliver, who was a shelter cat adopted from the Humane Society of York County. How handsome is he? (And very smart, too!)
