Round topped building Searcy AR Mulberry ST

I drive by this old round-topped building each day as I go to the new RE/MAX building shown here in the background.  Each day I wonder how much longer it will last.  The tenant has moved and it does not have a "for rent" sign on it.  Rumor is that it will be gone soon so perhaps it needs a little recognition.

I remember when this Mulberry Street existed but Beebe Capps Expressway did not.  I think I remember, but hope I'm wrong, being in a car with a nutty driver who just drove across the elevated concrete platform with a carload of us silly riders.  The platform is hidden behind the lattice work shown in the picture and the East entry to it must have been removed.  It was narrow, raised and made for a fast scary ride, if my memory is correct.

So, tell me, Searcy Sleuths, what this building was (train ran in front?) and was it a Searcy tradition to go zipping across the platform when the trains no longer came this way?  You know, sorta like when cruisin' the court square was the thing to do when my kids were young.

Barbara, even buildings we don't always think of as "beautiful" can have interesting histories.

Barbara, I know at one point on Mulberry a building like this one served as a warehouse for the shoe factory. Went there with my dad when I was small. The ramp out front was built that way on purpose (again old memory). The side facing the street could be used to unload a box car. The "drop off" east side could be used to back a large truck up to for loading. The ramp side was to allow for 2 wheel dolly access to the street level. I enjoy your blog -it brings back memories even though I have not lived in Searcy in 35
years.

Jeff, thanks for the additional information regarding the round topped building.  I even had one person on facebook say that she had also been across the ramp when it was a driveable ramp.  Things have certainly changed since you have been away!  Come back and see us sometime!

Jerry Pearson had his sheet metal business there for a long time. It was called White County Sheet Metal. This was in the 70s & 80s.
