Nobody wants to return from a vacation and discover their home has been vandalized or water damage occurred due to broken water pipes.  Prior to going on vacation, need to take some necessary steps to either to prevent or reduce the chances of some unfortunate event occurring while on vacation.  Following are some important tips to consider prior to leaving:

Have someone check on your home – Have a trusted neighbor, friend or relative check on your home on a regular basis.  In addition, notify local police department requesting them to do drive byes of your home.  Finally, another important safety tip is to have an alarm system in the house that is connected to a security company.

Don’t announce vacation plans on Social Media -  Prior to leaving on vacation do not announce your plans on social media.  Announcing to everyone that your home is going to be vacant allows strangers to determine your address which can lead to undesirable results.

Use variable lighting frequency – Program you lighting in different rooms at different time intervals.  Home invaders many times will case the property to determine the occupant’s patterns.  Being unpredictable tends to make invaders nervous and cause them to back off.

Lock all doors and windows – Get into the habit of locking all doors and windows whenever leaving the property.  If home is burglarized and not locked, insurance companies may be less likely to pay insurance claims because there was no forcible entry.

Electrical, water, cooling and heating – Turn off or unplug non-essential appliances and electronics. Turn off water supplies to washers.  Cooling and heating systems, set the system to a moderate temperature to reduce energy use.

Yard and home deliveries – Make sure the yard is well maintained and home deliveries to the front door are pickup immediately.  Have a maintenance person, neighbor or friend checking on your property to insure it looks like the home is being live in at all times.
