Location! Location! Location! . . . . for a Domain Name?

Being a Realtor® you already know that location is everything! If you read one of my previous blogs, you know that Domain Names are becoming the Real Estate of the 21st Century. So if this is true, how do you factor in location?

Does the Internet even have anything to do with location? Well, a website can reside in any computer anywhere in the world as long as it is connected to the Internet. Because of this, geographic location (a location that can be found on a map) is not necessarily important, but a virtual location (that can be found by your browser or a search engine) is very important.

The .com DNS (Domain Name Server) stores all domain names which end in .com (every single domain name must be unique). So if you were in the business of selling cars, you might have domain names such as chrysler.com, mercedes.com or toyota.com. What if you sold many different cars or cannot register one of those domains because they were registered by their respective auto manufacturers. You could register a generic name like cars.com. That would be a great name, right? Yes, except we're all a little too late in registering this domain name. Because this is such a great, common and generic name, it would be easy for search engines to find it and people to remember it, so it has great value. In other words, cars.com is prime real estate on the Internet.

The .com suffix of domain names is equivelent to New York City real estate. Our example of cars.com, is like Park Avenue. There are other suffixes to consider such as .org, .biz, .net, .tv, but these would be considered more like class "B" or class "C" properties. If you recently tried to register a .com domain name, chances are it was either not available or the price was really high. Did you know that diamond.com recently sold for $7.5 mil dollars? Location! Location! Location! . . . of the Internet.

So the next time you hear that domain names are like real estate of the 21st century, you'll know why. If you'd like to read more, do a google search or read this nice article on Realtor.org by Michael Russer.

Peter, I just bought a couple of new names today.  I only bought the .com, thinking it is a ".com" world.  Your blog looks great!!  Very fresh

Audry - I didn't know there were any left. But yes, you're right, it's a ".com" world. Thanks.

Peter, I use godaddy.com for my domains. They have an excellent domain management utility and it's very easy to use.

Andrew - thanks, this seems to be the preferred domain registrar these days. I registered all my names before godaddy existed (I'm old:-)

10 years ago, I had the opportunity to register some great domain names.  Too bad I was broke and didn't see the value!

Tina, sorry to hear about that. oh well, at least you got http://www.tinamerritt.com/ some people can't even register their own names. I remember back then registering names, it was tough coming up with them. many familiar names are trade marked, that's a no-no.

A friend of mine had been the chief counsel for Ralph Lauren. about 8 yrs ago, he told me about a guy who thought he could make out by registering polo.com, unfortunately it caused him a lot of trouble and cost him a lot of money.

Peter - I read somewhere that you can't use the word Realtor® in your domain name.  Well, you can, but I heard that the NAR will eventually hunt you down for trademark infringement.

Maureen - it's funny that you say that. I just saw a blog on realtown today: http://www.realtown.com/

saying:

Here's an update to yesterday's note from Sue Nett about an e-mail blast she and others received from a company using the domain e-PROREALTOR.com. NAR contacted the registrant of the domain that contained two federal trademarks owned by NAR.  As a result, that domain's web address www.e-prorealtor.com no longer points to an active web site.

I would be reluctant to register any name that has been trade marked. And if I did without knowing, I wouldn't fight it too much.

It's true.  The domain name is very important.  My name was already taken years ago but I have secured 14 other domain names that are relevant to my industry.  I also feel that those searching for homes are not searching for me, but rather what I can offer them which helps me when chosing a domain name.  That is interesting about diamond.com.  Wow.  I wish I was the seller of that domain.  Good post!

Terri - thanks. good that you got some names. having a domain of your own name does have advantages, but having generic domain names such as cars.com or diamond.com certainly has it's place.

one other thing that I had recommended in previous blogs is to register an address domain name. here's an example: http://www.427bedfordroad.com/
