Check Your Communication Approach First Thing

Cat TimingThey say in life timing is everything. So too it is with dealing with people in their preferred method of communication with them. Whether a budding and developing new personal relationship you are starting with someone, or the traditional business encounter with a new client, ASK first and up front, how they would like to be contacted by you, their BEST preferred method or methods. Maybe #1 and #2 to have a back up method to contact them both ways.

Why do you do this you might ask, or why is this important? Some methods may be ignored, or  more importantly SOME methods are downright ANNOYING to them. MANY Millennial generation folk HATE phone calls and do not check voice mails or even have the mailbox set up. Many of the elderly would think texting is very impersonal. So think the many methods,

Face to face, phone call, voice mail, text, email, social media in public or messaging, fax, even hand delivery of contracts OR U.S. Mail (does anyone use this anymore?) Surely electronic can be immediate but also check frequency, of how often they like contact or what circumstances.

DO NOT BE A PEST ....

Do not show up at their door ringing their doorbell with cookies unannounced.

Above all, be a helper, and not an annoyance or downright unexpected SURPRISE. Everyone does not possibly like being hounded by YOUR technique. We all are different. Respect that!! It will make for a harmonious relationship. Unfortunately on the business receiving side, you may have to take ALL incoming forms TO YOU, so you will just have to suck it up and deal with that part. Good luck with this BUT BE VERY CLEAR up front with what they want!!

Hi Gary - your post is right on point.  Communication is a big factor and asking up front is the best way to handle it.

Very good advice.  I know what you mean about the younger generation.  They don't answer their phone but they text right back.
