Maratha Jane
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy.
Martha was born in Princeton, Missouri back in 1852 to Robert and Charlotte. In 1865 the family moved to Virginia City, Montana. In 1866 her mother died of pneumonia. Once there she took whatever jobs she could find. She was a dishwasher, cook, waitress, dance-hall girl, nurse and she also drove an oxen team. Quite an accomplishment back then. Finally she found work as a scout at Fort Russell. It was during her time as a scot that she earned her nickname which I’m sure you’ll recognize. While riding a train in 1903 she was drinking heavily and became sick, she was taken off the train and a doctor was summoned. Shortly after he arrived she died. Cause of death was ruled inflammation of the bowels and pneumonia. She is buried next to Wild Bill Hickok at Mount Moriah Cemetery, South Dakota. She was 51
