RENOVATING? BE PREPARED TO BUDGET FOR MORE TIME & MONEY!!
For those of you who have lived through the renovation process of a kitchen, in particular, you know how frustrating it can be… not to mention the inconvenience
Although the time frame for this work will be carefully planned, be prepared for the unknown when they start breaking down the walls... or when parts don't arrive on time, or something is installed incorrectly and has to be removed, corrected and re-installed.
I went through that process a few years ago and was having one wall pushed back about 2 feet to enlarge my kitchen and they found something rather worrisome. One of my support walls was resting on a 2 x 4, and not being supported by any beam in the basement. In fact my oversize refrigerator has been in that spot for 6 years now, and I’m fortunate my whole floor, and house has not collapsed.
So after the second day of renovations, its already costing me more money and an extra three days to fix the problem. I’m trying to remain calm…. and keep focused on the end result.
More recenlty, I went through an en-suite renovation... time frame quoted 3 weeks... here it is 7 weeks later, and it is still not complete. Delays by the supplier pushed me back 10 days... then the counter top installation was incorrect, which pushed me back another 8 days... Still need the backsplash installed and some minor drywall repairs completed...
So Mr. & Mrs. renovator.. beware… if you budget for $25K. be prepared for $30K.. and if they give you time frame of 3 weeks… expected 4-5 weeks as there are always problems that arise which will delay the project.
In the end, all the frustration was worth the inconvenience when you see finished product of you new kitchen or bathroom!!
