Politics In The Rain - Is It Going To Get Ugly??!!

By

I asked what I thought was a fairly innocuous - yet interesting - question along the lines of those frequently asked by Conrad Allen.

The question (which also provided the answer):

Do you know how much government regulations add to new home prices? $84,671

The responses quickly took a political twist and turn.  Eric Kodner lambasted me chose to focus on where the link went to (FoxNews for shame!!) and concluding that the information was "unreliable" to put it "mildly"!  And - I happen to like Eric and appreciate what he has to say - no I am NOT dissing him - just making an observation.

Another of my friends in the 'Rain, Scott Godzyk quickly opined that this was another example of "FREE" things promised by a certain political party not actually being "FREE".

For a moment I thought we were going to witness an all out political bloodbath in the Q&A!

I think it's safe to say that 'Rainers have varying political views.

I think it's safe to say that this will be one of the most interesting Presidential elections in some time, regardless of which particular candidate you are hoping to see win.

I think it's safe to say that we are where we are today as a result of what has  happened before today.

I think it's safe to say that most everyone (except for those in the "establishment" on both sides of the aisle) thinks it's time for some "improvement".

There just isn't agreement about how to achieve that "improvement".

I'm hoping that between now and the election in November we don't see the 'Rain turn from Real Estate and Community to a bloody political forum where egos will be battered and bruised, and perhaps friendships turn to animus.

One of my longest running friendships is with someone whose political views are very different than mine, and although we banter about politics sometimes, we don't allow it to disrupt our friendship.

I know that when the dust settles in

check the countdown clock above:

Some of us will be cheering

Some of us will be disappointed

And I hope we're all still standing tall in the 'Rain!

Hi Tony and Suzanne.  I have no problem saying who I'll vote for.  Whoever is the Republican nominee will get my vote.  My best friend in real estate is a hard and I mean hard core Democrat.  Suffice it to say we have had some interesting discussions.

Hi Tony.  It is important to be able to disagree without being disagreeable.  Making it personal is so immature and counter productive.

I just avoid the political crap ... and anything that feels disharmonious to me regarding the political arena.  I enjoy my inner peace far to much to dive into political crap.

Tony,

There was no intention to "lambast" anyone, especially you. As I re-read my comments, everything I wrote was about the sources quoted in the article you linked to, not about you. I'm more than a bit surprised that the brief exchange that took place in your Q & A contribution struck you as "ugly" or personal.

You are ActiveRain friends of mine, Tony and Suzanne Marriott, and no exchange of opinions here changes that.  I didn't even consider my comments political, but rather about whether new home construction is hampered by regulation on any  government level. I happen to believe it is not.

In my comments, I used as an example the Chinese drywall debacle in the early 2000s, when the new construction boom in Florida and elsewhere (in the wake of hurrricane Katrina) contributed to some cut-rate builders using cheap drywall in homes. Like it or not, it took intervention on the state & federal level to deal with that mess.

Yes, we have regulation in our industry. The Code of Ethics is a form of regulation. Even ActiveRain has its rules and community guidelines. It seems overly simplistic to suggest that all industry regulation is evil or unnecessary.

By the way, Bob Betel also took issue with Scott Godzyk's comment, but for some reason, the only one mentioned in this post as disagreeing with the opinions in your Q&A entry is me. Greg Cremia and Gene Mundt also disagreed with the "all regulations are bad" theme in their comments. Why then is all this concern in your post focused on me??

I do find it curious that your Q&A entry this morning and this post are both public, instead of "members only".  If "Rainers" want to start a discussion here about politics, they have the option to do so in a private manner (again, by posting under members only).  And I agree with Hannah Williams' comment that religion and politics should be kept as personal opinions here on AR, rather than being aired in public, but that is more under the control of the person doing the posting.

I also find it amusing that I am now viewed by at least a few folks here as some sort of internet bully for responding to your Q&A. I read a comment above which states, "making it personal is so immature and counter-productive".  If you can tell me where I got "personal" with you in my comments to your Q&A, I will retract anything resembling a personal attack.

It is amazing how a seemingly innocuous question can turn into something that was never intended.  I think most people are very scared about what's happening politically but, as you say, there is disagreement about how to fix it.

Good Morning Kathleen Daniels - I certainly wasn't expecting that question to turn "political" - but it almost took on a life of it's own!

Good Morning Eric Kodner - always good to hear from you! I'll do my best to respond thoroughly to the points you made.

First, I used the crossed out term "lambasted" as a tongue-in-cheek "attention getter" - forgive me - it's my British humour learned when I lived there in the late 60s and early 70s in my formative years.  It sometimes falls flat in the USA, as it obviously did here - my apologies!

The reason for the question in the Q&A was simply that I came across the information, via FoxNews - but it could have been from a variety of other sources - just happened to be that one - and thought it would make for an interesting Conrad Allen type question.  Not for a moment did I think that it would spark any "political" discussion.

I was therefore somewhat surprised, although in retrospect it would have been far better to have used the link Fred Griffin provided later in the Q&A, to find your initial response that came across to me as "because it's Fox reporting it - it's meaningless".

The "conversation" did develop into examples , such as the "chinese drywall debacle", but I still find the total $ amount - the overall cost of government regulations - amazing.  By no means was I / am I suggesting that all regulation is "evil or unnecessary" - I'm still amazed by this particular price tag!

And I don't think the price tag exists due to one party or the other - it takes two to tango!

I didn't intend to make you feel "singled out" - I wasn't going to re-hash everything from the Q&A - instead I provided a link to the question - and your response was/is far and away the most prominent (most upvotes).

Public versus Members - when I returned to the 'Rain last year, after a few weeks I received a call from Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - to share some tips on how to improve my blog posts.  One of those tips was that since anyone can "sign up" and become a member, the "best practice" would be to make everything "public".  If I have that wrong for this question and post - I'm happy to adjust it!  Margaret - your thoughts??

I certainly don't view you as an "Internet bully" of any kind - and hope that nothing I have written has caused others to make that false assumption.  You did have an "exchange" or two on the Q&A with other 'Rainers - but that's to be expected/hoped for - constructive disagreement adds value to a discussion in my opinion.

I did not consider anything you stated in the Q&A to be "personal" or an "attack" on me.

I was just surprised that the focus of the question shifted so quickly from the $ amount - to "disregard it considering the source" - to comments from "both sides of the aisle".

The underlying reason for my post was the thought that if what I thought was an innocuous question could threaten to turn political so quickly - what will the experience in the 'Rain between now and election day be like if other, not so innocuous questions and posts, are written in the future.

Am I interested in spirited debate - you bet!

Am I interested in a civil war in the 'Rain - not so much!

I consider you a friend in the 'Rain, my sincere apologies if anything I wrote caused you distress, it was completely unintended.

I hope I covered all the points you raised - if not - let me know and I'll address what I missed!

Tony and Suzanne, I find it incredible that Real Estate Practitioners, of all people, will condemn you for shouting, "The Emperor is not wearing any clothes!"

Some people say "don't discuss politics and religion".

Why not?  What should we be talking about?  If we bury our heads in the sand, will the evils of Big Government simply disappear?  Of course not!

When we see documented factual evidence that Government regulation is forcing people out of homeownership, we need to talk about it.  We need to vote every incumbent out of office (Federal, State, and Local).  We need to elect people who will rein in this regulatory madness.

Fred Griffin "We need to vote every incumbent out of office (Federal, State, and Local).  We need to elect people who will rein in this regulatory madness."  Agreed - the "establishment" really doesn't care about which party "wins" - as long as they all remain to "play the game".
