Build Your "Forrest" One Seed At A Time

So last night I'm at the gym and I'm listening to Gary V's rant about how sick and tired he is of entrepreneurs looking for the "layups" in business and how people today want to have the champagne lifestyle on a beer work ethic. Basically people want all the success without putting in the time, effort and work.

Today I see a National Geographic post about a man in India who has planted and created his own forest (bigger then Central Park) by planting trees since 1979. Now he has a place where tigers and elephants and all sorts of wildlife live. He has now turned a desert into an oasis. This man is enjoying the success after 30 years of time, effort and work.

The question I have for people is this...which side of these stories do you fall under? Are your actions based on a long game or are you just looking for instant gratification with no investment on your part? I look at my success (and failures) over the past 15 years since I graduated from college and realize that I'm still along way off from my 30 year self (in business and life). But I'm on the right path...

Yes, life is full of distractions and we all "drift" from time to time (read "Outwitting the Devil by Napolean Hill/Sharon Lechter and you'll understand). But what is your ultimate goal? Where do you want to ultimately end up? What do you want to be when you grow up?

If you want to do 1,000 deals start off with 1. If you want to lose 100 lbs, start off by losing 1. If you want to have 1 million followers on YouTube, start off with 1 video getting 1 follower. 1 > 0. This is a philosophy that I've believed in well before Gary V has made it famous. One investor, one deal, one action repeated over and over and over again will build you a forest...a forest of wealth, experience, respect and admiration for you putting in the time and dedication to make it happen.

People don't notice you when you are starting out, but they love to congratulate you when you are at the top. They don't see the fact that you had to turn your own "desert" or business or life that was devoid of clients, money or experience. Michael Jordan started with one jump shot and repeated it millions of times. Warren Buffett started by buying one stock. Every successful person started somewhere by planting one "tree" and doing it over and over and over again! They were laser focused and believed in themselves long before society, social media, or the internet ever caught on.

If you believe in something you can't accept "NO" as an answer. You will fail....multiple times! But you will learn more from your failures and the No's then you will ever from your successes and Yes's. Whatever your niche, passion, idea, or God given ability is, it needs to be the #1 priority for you. Forget your friends. Forget your family. Forget the people that don't support you or encourage you. True friends and family will be there for you no matter what. The others aren't worth the time to waste worrying about what they think or say.

Those successful individuals who have walked in your shoes are often wiling to help, only if you are truly sincere and vetted to the process. Because EVERYTHING is a process. There is no cutting in line, express lane, or overnight success in life. You have to do the time. Quit posting motivational quotes and go motivate others by actually doing what you say you are going to do. Walk the walk and forget the talk. In today's world, there are enough talkers and not enough doers. Separate yourself from the crowds by actually following through and doing something instead of sitting around waiting for success to show up. Add value to your clients, vendors and audience and you'll be rewarded exponentially.

Turn off the TV, YouTube, emails and social accounts. Quit watching Gary, Grant and everyone else and go plant your tree! You haven't failed enough yet to earn the right to complain!
