Are you rusting in place like the tin man?

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

There are lots and lots of advances in the real estate business... and many of them have taken place since I joined, not that long ago...   Okay, okay... it was a long time ago... but still.

Computers have replaced those large listing books.  Cell phones have made us dramatically more reachable, faxes made the contracts sendable... and docusign and dotloop made them digital.

Electronic lockboxes allow us to monitor and track our showings, showingtime internet dashboard allows us to keep an eye on our showings from anywhere in the world.

And smart phones... don't even get me started.

But...

We have to be open to learning how to use all of these features.  Some have Supra or Sentrilocks, but have no clue how to use them, many are still struggling with the MLS on the computer, and don't understand the power of the databased behind it.  Smart phones have more power than the computing power of the entire nation in 1967... and I'm including NASA.  But you have to learn how to use them.

Most brokerages offer classes and workshops to bring you up to speed, but so few of us take advantage of these classes that we might as well be rusting in place.  It's important to keep up.

Oil can what?

Alan I don't get too surprised anymore when agents aren't up to speed with even simple stuff like the mls. I teach CE classes and always include some techie stuff or social media how to's.  Many of them are just beginning to 'catch on'.  It still seems weird to me thou....just saying.

I'm frequently surprised at some of the questions during CE classes.... they are sooooo entry-level... and typically from an agent who's been in the biz for a dozen years, or so.

Alan- you're right on target with this one.  I can remember several years ago, our local board had special luncheons focused on the latest in technology and social media.  I was always surprised at the number of members who were doing so little with websites, blogging, Facebook and much more.

I know... right?  I'm not secretive about the fact that I get a lot of business from blogging and my participation on Trulia and Zillow.  You'd think there would be a mass migration in the office to follow that lead.  And yet, thus far, I only have one office colleague (Noah Seidenberg) who has followed me into the rain.

You simply can't shelter in place when it comes to your real estate career.  When I was first licensed in 1981, the MLS was a book published once a week and left at our office door on Saturday mornings.  We didn't even have a fax machine. Times have rapidly changed things, and keeping up is essential to survival!

I remember that book... we had two of them... and nobody was allowed to leave the office with the book under penalty of ... well, we never learned what the penalty was.... 'cause nobody dared.

Technology is forever evolving and 6 months from now there will be new stuff to learn.  It is not a business where a rotary dial phone will make it

I'm not sure my kids would know what to do with a rotary phone... at the same time, my 8-month-old granddaughter probably is more adept at an i-pad than I am.

Alley? I don't mind the learning, it's the learning as the next thing comes out the next month to replace it.

Hi Alan.  To quote Alice, we have to run as fast as we can to stay in the same place!

I like it, though.  A job where I didn't have to keep learning would be a dead bore.
