Jean-Antoine
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy.
Jean was born in Versailles back in 1741. I can’t find anything on his childhood but let’s not let that get in our way. He attended the Academie royale de peinture et de schlpture (no I didn’t misspell it). In 1761 he won the Prix de Rome (whatever that is). In 1778 he joined the masonic lodge where he met Benjamin Franklin and John Paul Jones.
In 1785 he was asked by Benjamin Franklin to cross the pond and do some work for George Washington. I can go over all the awards he received but let’s cut to the point as always…. Can you tell me what Jean-Antoine Houdon is most noted for? Well he sculptured the bust of some famous people, let’s see how about George Washington, Denis Diderot, Benjamin Franklin, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson and others. His sculptures were used as models for various U.S. Postage stamps. He died in 1828 in Paris at the age of 87.
