Get Rid Of Your Kitchen the Green Way

I see that Patricia Kennedy wrote a blog the other day about selling your old kitchen on Craig's list.

That jogged my memory about an article last week in the New York Times' Home Section about going one step further and donating your kitchen, "Not Your Style?  They'll Take It".  In doing so you help keep perfectly good cabinets and appliances out of the the landfills and reap the rewards of a tax benefit too.

There are recyclers like Steve Feldman who persuades homeowners in the New York area to donate their lightly used or in some cases unused appliance to his charity called Green Demolitions.  He will send in a crew to dismantle, remove and haul away the kitchens and provides the homeowner with the paperwork for a charitable tax deduction.  He then turns around and resells the cabinets and appliances for a fraction of their original retail cost through his retail stores and through his web site, greendemolitions.org

Last year the company received 225 donated kitchens of which 28 kitchens were less than seven years old and valued at more than $90,000.  In the article he gives several examples of how smart consumers reaped the benefits of purchasing pricey kitchens at a not so pricey cost, including one couple who paid $25,000 for a kitchen with an original cost of $100,000.

Keep this in mind when it comes time for a new kitchen in your own home or when a client is concerned about the high costs associated with putting in a new kitchen.

Lisa, I know a few contractors who help people find recycled kitchens, but these guys really have it down!

What a fabulous service this is!  I need to do a little research and find out if anyone in my area is doing something similar - this is just terrific!

Lisa--What a great idea! One step beyond all of those cabinets installed in garages and basements...so much better than a landfill.

Great info.  I'm going to bookmark this posting and see if I can find a similar service in my area.  Thanks for sharing!

Lisa, I live here and haven't heard of that, what a wonderful idea and terrific information.  Many of my clients are redecorating or renovating and would love to see this site.

Cool.  I am going to redo my kitchen shortly.  We have a place here that will take alot of stuff like that.

Patricia~ this guy is doing it right, the demand for his reccycled kitchens is way up.

Lisa~ this is an idea that willmost likely evolve to all parts of the country.

Teri~ the basement and garage concept works at times too, just try to keep usable, workable items out of the landfill.

Carole~ you should definitely print off a copy of the NY times article and keep it for reference.

Denise~ sounds like Chesapeake is already ahead of the game.

Lisa, I wrote a post about Green Demolitions some time ago, as one of their stores is in my market area (Honesdale.)

I like going to the store because it's always a surprise - you never see the same items twice, it seems!

This to me is true "Green" living - reusing what can be reused rather than just buying more stuff...I wish more people would see the value in reclycling and renovating existing homes rather than building more and more and more "new" homes...but oh well.

Hmm, great idea, I've never heard of doing that, but our area is not that big into recycling either.

Lisa... I never heard of this.....  my parents just redid their kitchen, but kept the old cabinets and refinished them.  But this is interesting... thanks for sharing this.

HI Lisa,

Donating you kitchen? I've never heard of this either, but I guess it makes sense. Right now we have kitchen appliances all over Craig's list. I think they are coming from repos, sorry to say some folks are pickign their house clean on their way out the door.

Lisa - I'll keep this in mind when I re-do my own kitchen.  Love the info, thanks!

Tom~ I bet you can find a company like this in CA, since it's one of the "greenist" states.

Karen~ I would love to be able to browse and buy in a store like that.  I agree totally with your thoughts on recycling and reusing.  I really think we will see a lot more of it in the future.

Cindy~ maybe Houston is a little slower in catching on to recycling.  I believe I just saw that NJ is the best state at recycling.

Jeff~ what your parents did is probably the best way to go, especially if the cabinets were quality to begin with.

Linda~ It's unbelievable what you can get on Craig's list, it's really a great service for helping to keep stuff out of the landfills.

Vanessa~ thanks for reading

First Equity group~  I'm glad you are considering an idea like this, thanks for reading.
