Wellfield Gardens Plan for the Future!
Elkhart, Indiana.
Since the mid 1800s, the property, known as "North Main Street Well Field", has been a source of hydraulic energy and drinking water for the City of Elkhart. There are still 13 wells on the site that provide the majority of drinking water for the community.
In 2002, The Elkhart Rotary Club birth the idea to use the property to educate people about the uses of water for the communities and the benefits to nature.
In 2005, the plan was presented to the Board of Directors of the Wellfield Botanic Gardens, which would present 2 Themed Gardens and event spaces, a visitors center and guest amenities.
In 2006 Construction started with the making of the lakes and waterfalls.
Of the 36 acres, one-third is water and the remaining land used for the Botanic Gardens includes the themed gardens with statues and trails. The Welcome Center, by the parking lot is filled with information about the various areas.
