Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.
Button Gwinnett was born in Gloucestershire, Great Britain back in 1735 to the Reverend Samuel and Anne. While it is believed he attended school at St. Catherine’s Church no record survives. What I can tell you is he started his career as a merchant in England and is 1754 he married Ann Bourne. In 1762 he and Ann emigrated to America. Arriving in Georgia he purchased some land and became a successful planter. He was elected to the Provincial Assembly in 1769. He voted in favor of the Declaration of Independence, if you look you can see his signature on the document. He served in the Georgia state legislature. As he gained popularity he of course had a rival Lachian McIntosh. The feud boiled over and McIntosh publicly called him “a scoundrel and lying rascal”. This resulted in a duel in which both men were wounded and Gwinnett died several days later due to the wound.
His autograph is highly sought by collectors as a result. There are only 51 known examples of his signature that has survived. Only 10 of those are in private hands. If you happen to find an original and put it up for auction you could retire. Thus ends the history lesson for today.
