Hairdressers, Home Stagers and What the Heck do They Do?

You know what a hairdresser is.

Here is something else you know about hairdressers. You know what it is they do. They cut hair. Hairdressers also color hair and they even take it upon themselves to make curly hair straight and straight hair curly. Hairdressers are on their feet a lot.

The bottom line about hairdressers is it is their job to keep their clients looking great! Although, I do remember seeing a sign in a beauty salon which read, “I am a beautician, not a magician!”

What got me started on this post was a recent remark from my hair dresser. He is an excellent marketer and has taught me a number of things concerning marketing.

What my hairdresser, Bruce, said was, “I can’t believe how much time you have spent marketing your business.” Remember I said he is a great marketer so he was NOT discounting the fact that marketing is important. He was simply surprised at how much marketing is necessary to get a home staging business off the ground.

We talked a few more minutes and we realized the big difference in what it takes for him to market and what it takes for me to market.

Here is the main difference. It is the first sentence in this article – You know what a hairdresser is.

When Bruce is asked what he does; and he answers, “I’m a hairdresser,” he never ever receives a blank stare or a retort of, “What does that mean?” He need not mention the TV shows which depict his trade. He doesn’t have cause for trying to explain how he cuts hair or how he colors it. Bruce never has to explain that when a person spends money for a good hairdresser the rewards are:

  • Better self esteem
  • Improved physical appearance
  • Being socially acceptable
  • One’s social status is more pronounced
  • Hair is easier to manage

Elevator speeches aside home stagers are making strides at assuring the consumer that home staging is necessary for:

  • Better self esteem
  • Improved physical appearance
  • Being socially acceptable
  • Assuring one’s social status is more pronounced
  • Property is easier to manage

Here are some of the skills we assume a good hairdresser will have:

  • Expertise concerning which style is best for each individual texture of hair
  • Knowledge of the latest styles
  • Familiarity with flattering styles for particular facial shapes
  • Proficiency with chemicals
  • Cutting skills

Here are some of the skills a good home stager has:

  • Expertise concerning which style is best for each individual property
  • Knowledge of the latest styles
  • Familiarity with flattering styles for particular houses
  • Proficiency with accessories
  • Merchandising skills

Here is something you may not have thought about concerning your hairdresser.

  • He doesn’t promise you will win a beauty contest
  • She won’t guarantee that you will get the job you are applying for
  • She can’t assure you will find the perfect man
  • He will never warranty you will rock the socks off your spouse
  • He isn’t going to be able to be able to hand you your 4 year degree

Here is something you may not have thought about concerning your home stager

  • He doesn’t promise your house is priced right to sell
  • She won’t guarantee that you will get the traffic necessary to sell a property
  • She can’t assure you will find the perfect house shopper
  • He will never warranty you will sell within a certain time frame
  • He isn’t going to be able to make sure your real estate agent will market aggressively

But, when you have found a great hairdresser you know he or she will do their very best to make your hair the best it can be. You know you will receive all the benefits a wonderful hairdresser can give you! You know what an excellent hairdresser is and what he does.

And, when you have found a fantastic home stager you know he or she will do their very best to make your property the best it can be. You know you will receive all the benefits an excellent home stager can give you. If you don't know yet, the time is coming when you will know what an excellent home stager is and what he does.

Bet you didn’t know hairdressers and home stagers had so much in common.

60 Comments on Hairdressers, Home Stagers and What the Heck do They Do?

Yvonne, what an EXCELLENT post!  Very clever comparisons.  I think the day is coming soon where less people will ask what a home stager is.  More and more people seem to be aware.  I love your statement:  "If you want to improve your sociability call a great hairdresser.  If you want to improve your property's marketability call a great home stager".

04/29/2008 09:12 AM by Charlene Storozuk - Burlington Ontario Home Stager (Dezigner Digz)

Yvonne, another perfect analogy...  I just love analogies, they always paint such a clear picture.

04/29/2008 09:15 AM by Gary Barnett Home Matters, Home Stagers, Indianapolis (Home Matters)

Yvonne~ LOVE IT!  Very thoughtful analogy.  Now...improving sociability...hmmm, that reminds me, I'm due for a trim.  Not so much for improved sociability, but definitely improved visability...I can't see so well with all this hair in my eyes.  ( :  You're analogy was very eye opening itself!

Cheers!

Thank you Charlene! You are right! As I was filling my gas tank yesterday a gentleman (who had noticed the sign on my car) came and asked for my business card. He knows what a home stager is.  He wants to stay in touch with me for when he lists his property. He "gets it!" Cool; huh?

04/29/2008 09:44 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Hey Gary! You are so right! Analogies are the hooks on which people can hang new information. I think I feel another blog coming on. :)

04/29/2008 09:54 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Fantastic Gina! It is great to be of help in any way we can. :) My hairdresser has been out of town for the past month because of a death in his family. Yesterday, I took a look in the mirror and almost cried. Hopefully he will be back next week. I hope I can make it through.

04/29/2008 09:56 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Insightful as always!  Yvonne, you have such a talent for painting pictures.  Hmmmm .... seems like I know quite a few stagers who have these qualifications.... I guess all I need now is to go get my hair cut :) - Calie

04/29/2008 10:14 AM by Calie Waterhouse - Chandler AZ Homes (John Hall & Assoc)

Thank you Calie! You are right, many home stagers have the qualifications necessary to improve the marketability of a given property. But I've noticed that you are always very presentable. How DO you do it?

04/29/2008 11:05 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

It must have been so much fun having the discussion that led to this post.  As you realized each thing the two had in common and started building the comparison you must have been so excited.  Very well written and thought out.  I'm very blessed to have a very talented hairdresser in Boston who just happens to be my brother.  He cut my hair short today, in fact.  I probably should work on a new photo for my profile...

04/29/2008 02:44 PM by Sharon Tara New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations)

Awesome post!!!!!  I love the comparison.  It can be frustrating time and time again to have to explain to someone what a Home Stager does.  I love it!!!

04/29/2008 02:44 PM by Tori Lynn Ross - Omaha's Premier Home Stager (Ross Designs, LLC)

Great post!  This is a clever analogy and something simple for those uninformed about home staging.  Thanks for a great post!!

04/29/2008 03:51 PM by Nancy Robertson, HSR, ASHSR (Signature Style Staging)

I got a big kick out this because I once was a hairdresser and now a home stager....who knew they had so much in common!  LOL!  Great post as always!! :)

04/29/2008 05:22 PM by Teresa Meyer-Home Staging Cincinnati, OH Stage a Star: Home Stager Cincinnati (Stage a Star Staging & Consulting Services)

Sharron, yes, we did have fun during our discussion. While my hairdresser is not my brother, he is my neighbor and friend. He is a wonderful guy. BTW It will be fun to see your new short cut.

04/29/2008 05:47 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Tori, luckily we are moving to the point that soon a person will not ask, "What is a home stager?" but will rather ask, "Who is YOUR stager?" Won't that be great?

04/29/2008 05:49 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Thank you Nancy. It is nice to be able to see the analogies which help us explain ourselves to others. Thanks for stopping in!

04/29/2008 05:52 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Oh Teresa, how fun! One of the things I often tell Bruce is that I'm so glad to have found him to do my hair. I don't have a clue how to cut, style or any of that. We are so blessed that Bruce trims our granddaughters bangs so she doesn't have to look like she was caught in a lawn mower if her mom or I tried to cut them. :) Thanks for sharing. You made me smile.

04/29/2008 05:57 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

That was such a clever post.  And so fitting.  I too have faith that the day IS coming when people will already know what a stager is so we won't have to explain.  Onward and upward!

Pam Ives, Home Staging of Wilmington

04/29/2008 06:15 PM by Pam Ives (Home Staging of Wilmington)

Pam, it is fun to contemplate; isn't it? Yes, one day we will have our own separate listing in the yellow pages too. You think? For us, in our neck of the woods, the only way to get in is to list under Interior Design which doesn't really make for a clear listing. Yes, Onward and Upward!

04/29/2008 06:22 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

What a treat to read this-you are right on the mark with this post!!  Thank you again for another insightful post Yvonne!!!

04/29/2008 10:57 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

What a great analogy which I can use to help both decorator/stagers and professional organizers understand the need to educate on what they do. Thanks for taking the time to really develop this idea.

04/30/2008 05:40 AM by Tina

I have staged a number of our listings....what a difference !  While there are lots of ways that realtors can compromise their credability...home stagers need to be careful as well. I heard about one recently who in a vacant home added a few candles and knick knacks...no furniture, no window treatments....called it "staging".  I am nto sure who is goofier...the "Pretend stagers" or the realtor dumb enough to pay for it !

Good POST !

04/30/2008 08:41 AM by Sally & David Hanson, Southeastern Wisconsin Realtors (First Weber Group)

I have the sudden intense urge to get my hair done!  I want all those great benefits and I know I've let things get a little shaggy.  Looking at my home, I could use some help as well, not because I'm moving, but because I deserve to have a well groomed home to live in :)  Thanks for the fun post.

04/30/2008 09:19 AM by Beth Anderson ~ Tecumseh / Lenawee County ~Realtor (Success, Realtors)

Hi Yvonne, I just love this analogy.  It's funny, I thought this exact thing recently as I was coloring my own hair...mostly because I just don't have the $$$ to get it done like I used to.  You go to a professional and you pay them because you have certain expectations about the end result.  When you do things yourself, you may be able to achieve a decent end result, but you essentially get what you pay for...or haven't paid for...and the end result is NOT going to be the same.

If you want the professional results, you have to hire the professional to do it...end of story.

04/30/2008 10:15 AM by Abby Reilly; NW Atlanta Home Stager (ALR Home Staging and Showcasing, LLC)

Great comparision. Thank you!! It's interesting to note that they both need a natural talent. The innate ability to see what needs to be done and not over do it.

04/30/2008 10:32 AM by Debbie Mounteer- Your Utah StagingĀ® Agent (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage)

Great Post Yvonne.  It is true, if you want yourself or your property to stand out from the compitetion..... call your Professional.

Yvonne,

You've hit the nail on the head again.

Sometime I feel like we're going to have to go on a pilgrimage and stage every house in the country before people (who should know better) stop asking "Now what is staging?"

04/30/2008 09:14 PM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Tina, How nice that you can use the information to help others. That is great!

04/30/2008 09:31 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Thanks for the comment Sally and David. Sometimes home owners are only willing to pay for a vignette staging so what you saw may have something to do with that. But, you are right, there are times when homes are called staged when what they are is a repository for trinkets instead. That is not good.

04/30/2008 09:35 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Beth, you have given me a great giggle. Yes, getting our hair done is such a treat. You are right getting your home done can be even more fun! New throw pillows and a few rearranged candlesticks may give your home a good pick-me-up. And, you are right, you do deserve to have a well groomed home!

04/30/2008 09:40 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Abbie! So cool. You are right about the end of the story being what results we can expect when we are willing to pay for a pro. Very good!

04/30/2008 09:43 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Yes, Debbie! The gift of hairdressing or the gift of home staging must be a part of the overall picture. And, I agree with you that over done can just be a let down for all concerned.

04/30/2008 09:46 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Kirk, LOL! I suppose the whole story falls apart if one doesn't know what a hairdresser is. Good question!

04/30/2008 09:48 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Thanks Leslie! Yes, a professional is called a professional for a very good reason. You always have great insight and I appreciate you!

04/30/2008 09:50 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Thank you Susan! And -- don't you think it is funny when people come into your home and ask if it is staged? Like most Americans, I own way too much stuff. When it comes time for us to sell, I will have to call in the pre-packer and the stager. Thanks for stopping in!

04/30/2008 09:56 PM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Hi Yvonne!

You just reminded me...I need to get my hair cut! How is it that time flies and next thing you konw it's been 2 1/2 months since your last cut??? Busy I guess :)

What a wonderful comparison you have made...and great explanation!

Hope you are doing well!

Beth

In summary:

The hairdresser is more concerned with the perm.

The stager is more concerned with the fern. :-)

Yvonne, Slowly but surely the word is getting out about the benefits of home staging!  Thanks to excellent posts like yours, consumers are being educated about why it works .... thank you for making it such a fun read.

Been waiting for this one since you told me about it.   CUTE CUTE CUTE.  And educating as well.  Nice to have you write , always awaiting the twist on your next post.

Beth, Thanks for your concern. We are all doing quite well. We are all also busy little bees. It is so good to have you playing around in the rain with us once again!

Yes David, you got it. :) Gosh, perhaps I should have used your lines in the original post. It is fun to have you hanging out here. Thanks!

05/02/2008 09:40 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Thank you Maureen! It is true. There are more and more people who are learning what it is we do. Now we are even moving into the reahlm of them understanding that what we do is quite valuable to today's home seller. Cool; huh?

05/02/2008 09:42 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Christy, thanks for the kind words. Sometimes we do have to stop and think about what those we rely on actually must do in order to complete their jobs. Glad you stopped in!

05/02/2008 09:44 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Hey Terrylynn! How fun that you remembered I mentioned this post before I actually had it all together. You are in the trenches helping people get to know home stagers on a different level. You are appreciated!

05/02/2008 09:48 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Yvonne- I love the comparisons - this was an excellent post- Once when we were staging a house - the owner came while we werent finished

I told her this is like looking in the mirror and the hairdresser hasn't blown it out or curled your hair - so this is still the wet phase- so yes take a look around!

05/02/2008 11:50 AM by Marci Toliver, Anderson, SC/ Spartanburg/Greenville SC/ Home Staging (Fresh Eye Designs)

Interesting comparison! Very well written.  We hear REA's telling us that they can stage a home themselves.  But can they do it correctly.  Now we can add, "Sure you can cut hair TOO....but can you do it correctly?"  :)

05/02/2008 12:52 PM by Janice Sutton - Temecula Murrieta Home Stager - Home Staging (1st Stage Property Transformations )

Hey Marci! Your example is priceless! I've also compared the staging process to decorating a cake. When it first begins it is just a concept without depth or personality. When it is complete it is fabulous. Thanks for commenting!

05/03/2008 10:03 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Janice my friend, your illustration is so good. Of course there are some who can indeed stage and be agents but they are not the norm. As for cutting hair -- I'm much too chicken to try that one. Thankfully, there are people who are very good at it and they are worth paying for -- just like stagers!

05/03/2008 10:07 AM by Yvonne Root Northern Arizona Home Stager (rooms b.y. root)

Yvonne, Wonderful post!  From the very first, in training we were told that we were on the ground floor of a new industry, that was the good news.  The bad news, is that we would need to spend lots of time educating people.  People are slowly getting it.  If they watch HGTV they understand and for those that don't then it takes a lot longer!

BTW, I was born in Peoria, AZ and still have lots of relatives in the Glendale and Phoenix areas.

Happy Staging.  Would you mind if I shared your post witn my hairdresser and a couple of clients?  I will give you credit of course.  Don't you love the creativity in this AR Community?

05/04/2008 09:33 AM by

Well, Anonymous :) Thank you for the compliment. Certainly, feel free to use this post with your hairdresser and your clients. We have Arizona connections I see. While I was born in New Mexico I'm quite pleased to call Arizona home.
