After having lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orange County, CA, over approximately 20 years, I can tell you that I consider myself a skilled driver. You have no choice but to learn to navigate congested traffic and find quicker routes and be aggressive and yet be safe. I've got many years under my belt of driving not just cars but also motorcycles throughout California. I recall parallel parking my car in such tight spaces on a steep, uphill angle on Nob Hill in San Francisco that I would walk away from the car amazed at what I just accomplished! Funny!
So, when I moved to Greenville, SC I figured things would be less stressful in terms of traffic. Well, compared to what I put up with in California...we have no traffic here in Greenville! What Greenville calls "rush hour" could be considered synonymous with 3AM traffic on the 405 FWY in Southern CA!
However, I did have to get used to something entirely new for me...twisting, winding two lane roads! These paved roads that lead through our suburbs were modest dirt roads years ago, that went through the beautiful countryside and navigated farmland. My own subdivision was built up on former farmland. We've got quite a few of these two lane, former farmland type roads here in Greenville. It all adds up to the charm of our region. We've got hills, winding roads and beautiful scenery.
When I first began driving on these roads I had to quickly respect how easy it would be to swerve across the center line and have a head-on collision with on-coming traffic. I had quite a few jolts of adrenalin hit me when I'd catch myself correcting my trajectory on the road, after taking a brief second to pay attention to the radio or my cell phone.
Well now, knock on wood, I'm pretty good at this whole two-lane/former farm road driving! I am able to comfortably navigate these unique driving circumstances here in suburban Greenville and enjoy the beautiful scenery at the same time!
Driving around Greenville on any given day is a pleasant experience, filled with beautiful flowering trees, nice neighborhoods and twisting, winding roads! It is quite a pleasant change from the "concrete jungle" I left behind in the Greater Los Angeles region!
