Just How Devious are They ?

By
Real Estate Technology with Carmody and Associates LLC

Americans love a good conspiracy.  I have written previously about the American public preferring to think our problems are the result of some complex and devious plan by politicians that didn't quite work out rather than to see the problem as the result of human incompetence.

But it is interesting to wonder how carefully considered some of the events of this year's silly season of Presidential preference contests may have been.

I offer two modest examples.

First, does Mrs Clinton really think that she can legitimately overtake Senator Obama for the nomination - or is she now trying to cripple Obama as a candidate so that he will lose to a Republican she knows she can beat in 2012.  It has been suggested by high ranking Democrats.  Have the Clintons really taken a page from the Tonya Harding school of politics ? Oh, say it isn't so.

Second, has Senator Obama benefitted from the Jeremiah Wright circus to the extent that he may have planned it all ?  In these days of good will and tolerance, one of the most damaging allegations against the Senator from Illinois is that he is a Muslim.  Did Obama provide the Jeremiah Wright story to the media (or at least not respond to it for more than the expected time period) because he was benefitting from the constant drumbeat in the media that he was a Christian - had attended a Christian Church in Chicago for 20 years and here is his nutty pastor to prove it - and get people to talk about it !

Truth ? Plan ? Conspiracy ? Unintended consequences ?

The truth is an elusive goal in politics.  You won't find it in the media - and you may not find it here.

Ted - I think you may discover that what you believe often supports your subconcious and/or concious desires. On position number one, I just happen to believe that the Clinton's are capable of all sorts of devious processes. Of course, at various times, during the campaign, I felt that the former President was sabotoging her efforts. (Lesson in life: You lie, you swear to the lie, you admit the lie and spend the rest of your life talking in a shadow of doubt.)

On point number two, I don't know. I guess that I am more familiar with Obama's minister and his body of work that I am familiar with Obama. I will gladly admit that Obama's attraction for me is squarely based in his skills as a speaker.

I have oft mentioned that in my opinion a Presidents most visible responsibility is to convey to the American people a sense truth, tempered with optimism and hope. We all will have our feelings about the impact of any Presidency. Roosevelt will be long remembered for the "fireside chats", Kennedy for his clarion call to Americans to public service, Reagan for his firm stand against the Soviets and Bush for his public demeanor following the terrorist attacks. Regardless of policy, when they finished speaking, most listeners felt proud to be an American.

I don't for one minute believe that any of the candidates will have the mandate to make sweeping changes in spending on social programs. In the end, solutions will be the result of free enterprise. They speak of universal health care. If you have sufficient funds, health care is available universally. They speak of better education. If you have sufficient funds, a better education system is available.

We don't, as a nation, have sufficient funds to offer these programs to everyone. We, as a nation, can not tamper with tax codes (corporate or private) to "share the wealth" in a greater fashion than it is already being shared. If tax increases are levied, those taxed will merely pass the increased cost on to consumers in the form of higher prices.

Our answers will not be found in the West Wing nor will they be found in the hallowed halls of Congress. We shall succeed in the same fashion we have succeeded in the past. We shall discover better "mousetraps" and as one is created, competition will take place and in the end, we as a people shall endure.

Just my morning thoughts...thanks for the post.

Bravo, John.  As Bill Buckley said on occasion, "Gee Whiz, I wish I had said that"

Thanks, Bill for the feature

Ted - I agree with John's post and it certainly was very well written.  What I'd like to do here is point out something that I find disturbing:  you mention that one of the most damaging allegations against Obama is the notion that he may be Muslim.  There's no question in my mind he's Christian, but if he were a follower of Islam, why should that be a problem?

Ted- We all know the Clintons did nothing to help their party in the midterms in the 90s.  Giving the house and senate to us.  I dont think they give a rats behind what happens to their party.

As for hillary beating us in 2012?  Ann Counter said it best yesterday when she said she is voting for the Veep, not McCain.

They should charge us to witness this, im loving it.

Tchaka - for my second Buckley quote of the day, "Well put".

I was actually speaking of public perception and not my personal preferences.  And I do not believe a Muslim candidate for President would be well received at this point in time in the US.  But since you seem to raise a slightly different issue, I will try to address it.

While I try to be tolerant and open minded on most questions, my writing and your pointed question show a bias on my part for which I apologize.  Although I have a number of Mulsim friends whose world view I respect and appreciate, I find the lack of a line in Islam between religion and government to be uncomfortable.  There is, by Constitution, no religious test for any office in our government.  I am totally comfortable with Muslim candidates and elected officials - such as Representative Ellison of Minneapolis - and I wrote in AR at the time in support of his taking his oath of office as a Congressman using the Koran.  I recognize that there are fundamentalist radicals in every religion who would scare me.  But, until my personal knowledge of the Koran reaches a level of understanding and belief that Islam is a religion of peace, I would have difficulty in voting for a Muslim candidate for President.  I find the calls for application of the Sharia law in Britain and the increasing influence of Islam in Europe to be disquieting.

While I try to write with accuracy and lack of bias (other than the disclosed conservative bent) this is not the first time that you have caught me slightly off base.  Keep it up. I am pleased to be challenged in my opinions or presentation of my point of view.

My point in this post was that Senator Obama had a PR problem and he may have used the Pastor Wright story to help him with the unrelated problem.   Incidentally, further events today may suggest that this is not true - as the Senator has used much stronger language about his former pastor today.  I have not reviewed the details yet.

I think we should be very careful when we accuse politicians of intelligence. It's a dangerous thing to do.

iKEEP HAVING THIS NIGHTMARE WHERE hILLARY LOSES THE NOMINATION AND THEN CONVINCES mCcAIN TO CHOOSE HER AS vp TO SHOW A UNIFIED TICKET THEN AFTER THEY WIN SHE FINDS SOME WAY TO POISON HIM AND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A HEART ATTACK. oR MAYBE JUST GIVES HIM A REAL ONE WITH HER INCESSANT WHINING AND SHE BECOMES PRESIDENT.

no disagreement there - but the choices were complex manipulation or incompetence.  Intellect is not a requirement.

Tchaka - it is interesting to me that you are wondering why a Muslim would be unacceptibale to the American people. I think we have seen that a Mormon is unacceptible and although I personally couldn't care less about which god my President prays to (or not), I am aware that right now a Muslim would be unelectible to the highest office in the land.

Simon: Thanks, brother. I love William F. Buckley and Winston Churchill.

Ted: You really have to teach me how to put the American flag in the background of my profile and posts.

I love it.

I am certainly glad I have you two to bring a little class to the proceedings.

Nick - I posted an item <here> which contained links to the Jeff Turner and Brad Carroll instructions.  I found an Orange County (CA) beach scene with the flag and the palm trees and was able to do a crop with the right specs to give me the flag and part of the palm trees as a background. Simon and Tchaka:

Americans won't embrace a Muslim for good reason.  Read the Koran to find out why this is not a peaceful religion.  Read the Koran to see what they really believe about you and me.  Read the Koran to find out what they want to do to "infidels." (non Muslims).

After you read it, maybe you will understand why Americans will never embrace a Muslim.

Ted - thank you for your thoughtful response, you are a gentleman.  I did not intend to question your personal preferences (the question was meant to be more rhetorical) however I'm glad that you perceived it that way because I appreciated your comments.  Islam is a religion of peace, much more so than the average person in the US understands, however I don't know enough about the extent of its secularism vis a vis the Koran (ie, I am not a scholar of it).  I lived in the largest Muslim country and there's clear distinction between church and state, but when we look at Saudi Arabia, Yemen and a few others, that line is blurred (or barely exists).  Is that Islam?  A corruption of it?  Or perhaps tenet of Arabism?  I don't know.  I wish I did so we could continue this dialogue.

Simon - what's interesting to me is that you actually think I'm wondering that.  You should know me better by now.

Bill - you are incorrect that Islam is not a peaceful religion, some argue that it's more peaceful than Christianity.  The evil actions of extremists under the guise of Islam does not make the religion bad.
