Great news for Charlotte, North Carolina home owners ~ there will be no property tax increase this year. The City Council voted to shelve the City Manager's proposal to increase taxes by 1% for the new fiscal year beginning July 1st. The proposed 43-cent property tax hike was intended to help pay for 50 additional police officers and 18 firefighters.
Instead, the money for more police officers and firefighters will be raised by a combination of financing over a 5-year period for police and fire equipment and raising the annual garbage collection fee. The annual garbage collection fee will be raised $8 per household to $33. (Certainly a much less expensive option than increasing property taxes for most home owners.) This increase is expected to generate some $2.6 million in the coming year.
However, Charlotte home owners will be facing an increase in fees for water and sewer services starting this July of approximately 4.4% for the average residential household (about $2.54/month).
