Public Beach Lake Norman

Over this past weekend many families looked for fun summer activities starting around the Lake Norman area. Local pool and splash pad opening gave families plenty to do with kids in mind. The Lake Norman YMCA opened their beach to the members and offer paddle boarding, kayaking and other fun water sports for all ages.

Probably the most exciting new addition to Lake Norman was the opening of Ramsey Creek Beach. With around 20 million spent on constructing the new beach and parking area, there was much hype in this area. The beach has been set to a 500 person capacity with around 130 parking spots available to beach goers. The cost is $3 for Mecklenburg residents and $5 for non-residents.

Ramsey Creek Beach, Lake Norman

Hearing about the beach capacity and parking limitations, one might think there is no way we are fighting the crowd. Well, that was not the case this past Memorial Day Weekend. Families from all over the Charlotte and Lake Norman are flocked to the beach in hopes to be 1 of the 500 to enjoy the beautiful weather and cool water of Lake Norman. This made for a hectic experience for not only beach goers but for the local businesses and residents. Given the relatively limited parking at the Ramsey Creek Beach, people had to park anywhere they could find and walk considerable distances to the beach. Only to be turned away because the beach was over crowded and past capacity.

As a local resident with children, I am hopeful the crowds will die down as the excitement wears off. However, we can’t be too hopeful because the Ramsey Creek Beach is one of very few public access locations on Lake Norman. We will see what the future hold for those of us that do not live on the shores of Lake Norman.

Happy Summer everyone!
