9 Easy Ways to Cultivate ActiveRain Relationships
Commenting is at the heart of so much that goes on socially here on ActiveRain.
You, Too, Can Cultivate ActiveRain Relationships
No one here would likely question that Activerain is a mighty powerful, and meaningful, social network, especially those of us who have been here for a while. It’s an extraordinary place to learn and grow, but also an amazing place to meet lots of people from all over and develop some pretty awesome friendships.
So how can you cultivate Activerain relationships and turn them into something very special. A few thoughts…
Comment on AR Members’ Posts
Commenting is at the heart of so much that goes on socially here on ActiveRain. It’s a nice way to share an opinion, compliment the writer, raise a question, or share an alternative perspective. The writer, and possibly others who are commenting, will likely remember you (hopefully for the right reason – we’re not going to discuss etiquette, flaming and so on here – remember you want to cultivate the relationship not shatter it!!) and may be inspired to stay in touch with you on AR as they get to know you better, and you them. And sometimes a comment can become a short conversation with the writer…again hopefully for good reasons.
Reciprocate Those Comments
When someone comments on your post consider reciprocating with a comment on one of theirs. It’s not exactly a conversation but the back and forth comments can foster a relationship with someone you like and whose reading you admire, and encourage further dialogue, or perhaps a follow. So…
Follow Others’ Blogs
Lots of AR members will follow you back, and that is a great way to start getting to know someone – their style, their passion, their market, their business, and them personally. That can lead to a stronger and more personal relationship which can blossom into a true friendship. And down the road who knows…possibly a referral, in-bound or out.
Thank Others for Following You
Do you reach out and thank others for following you? You should. What a nice way to let someone know you appreciate their follow, and perhaps there is even some personal information to be shared in that thank you, that could be an email, or even a call.
Reblog Posts
What a nice compliment to someone who’s writing you think others would enjoy and learn from. And the writer will see that you reblogged their post and very likely will thank you. And that could be the start of something with someone whose writing you admire.
One might argue that email gets over-used, but emailing those you are getting to know and like takes the relationship outside the realm of day to day commenting on AR. You might have a question for them, have interest in their market, want to send a special compliment or thank you for a post, or simply want to get to know them better. Sometimes you might see a typo in a post and want to bring that to someone’s attention but not publicly – they will appreciate that you cared enough to point it out, politely of course!
Send a Card or Thank You Note
Personal notes can mean so much, and this could be another way to strengthen a relationship. It could be a simple thank you, or perhaps something you want to share they might enjoy – a photo, a recipe. My bet is anyone receiving a personal thank you note WILL remember it. And that brings me to…
Pick up the Phone and Call
Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland is a master at doing this and has a wonderful reputation here on AR for reaching out to others, new and experiences. We also have an occasional contest, sponsored by Debbie Reynolds , that encourages us to Ring and Sing in the Rain.
A phone call is the next best thing to being there, with an opportunity to really get to know the other person by engaging in conversation. Or perhaps they’ve had a bad experience, lost a loved one, or for some reason could benefit from a friendly call. Even better, try Facetime or a Skype call to make it even more real-life!
Attend an AR Meet-up
Meet-ups are a wonderful and rewarding way to get to know those who we have met online, or perhaps have not yet gotten to know. This face-to-face interaction takes the online relationship to a whole different level – trust me, having attended over a dozen of these I know it’s true.
Another good idea is to arrange to get together with someone, or perhaps several people, when traveling – vacation, a business trip, a conference or expo - or simply just take time to drive some distance and meet up! I have yet to hear anyone say they regretted doing this!
Does this stuff work? You bet. You just have to reach out and make it happen.
Your thoughts?
