Lots of Fun Is Not Just An Illusion with East West Players in Los Angeles
This classic Tony award winning play is now appearing(through June 26) as the final presentation of the two year 50th anniversary season of the East West Players in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. I saw the performance during its opening week in May.
East West Players(EWP) is a successful group which was established in 1965 to provide opportunities for Asian Pacific actors to take on roles beyond the stereotypical parts that were being offered in Hollywood. Today, EWP is an award winning company with a successful track record in Los Angeles.
You probably know the story line from the movie The Birdcage which starred Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. That movie was based on the French film La Cages aux Folles from 1978. And instead of Florida, it’s St Tropez.
This is a fun production. A pre-show with a drag queen and a couple of boys romp about and sing get the audience in the proper mood. Lots of show tunes that you may or may not know -- I don’t think it really matters since it’s so much fun. It’s a quick moving production. The David Henry Hwang Theatre is located in the historic Union Center for the Arts at 120 North Judge John Aiso Street in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles.
