ScluptureThere is a lot to be said about the old phrase "He is a self made man". It kind of reminds me of the story: Chuck Norris was born in a log cabin that he built. Of course that can not be true... even of Chuck Norris.

However as our Active Rain friend Lou Ludwig reminds us each and every day, one way or another, our thoughts lead to our actions and our actions lead to our success or our failures.

Nearly every day, if not every day, we read about someone escaping poverty to become a huge success in business, in the community, or even in their faith. Nearly every day, if not every day, we read about someone who had life handed to them on a silver platter only to squander away, money, morals, and life.

I believe there is a direct tie between Real Estate and success although I could not pinpoint that tie for you. Having a place to call home give people a sense of security and security builds confidence, Confidence builds determination which builds a will to succeed. Kind of like The Little Engine That Could.

I was a cocky spoiled rotten kid of 18 when I purchased my home. My folks did not loan me a penny, not even for a down payment. I worked at a record shop for about $1.35 an hour. The lesson I learned that after paying all my bills I could either eat or party were not as easy to learn as it sounds.

I do have compassion for others but the fact remains, most people are where they are by their own doing, good or bad.

As Realtors we all hear sad stories from folks who tell us life has been unfair to them and they are entitled to a home but their credit is bad and they don't have a penny for a down payment (while they light up a smoke to go with that beer). Well boohoo, quit smoking, quit drinking, quit buying all your groceries at the 7 - 11 and start saving up for that down payment.

Our lives are what we make of them. If we throw pity parties then we are to be pitied. If we make lemonade out of lemons we will make ourselves successful. A good place to start your path to success is to own the roof you live under. Not everyone can afford it... only the ones that strive to.

Great post Bob "RealMan" Timm and a great shout-out for Lou Ludwig .  We are all only what we make of ourselves in this life...those with the entitlement mentality need to wake up - fast!

Thanks Lisa Von Domek I am so sick of the entitlement mentality I wish the political climate would change and cut it to those who truly can not work.

It is the entitled generation that doesn't want to save or give up anything to have a home. It takes some sacrifices by working long hours and saving and scrimping to get a downpayment together.

I just wonder where they get that attitude Debbie Reynolds ? Is it taught in schools or what?

I agree with Debbie Reynolds on this, a generation of entitled spoiled young people think the world owes them everything.

I just wonder where they learned this Sybil Campbell , at home or in school? If they learned it at home then shame on our generation.

At the height of the recession there were plenty of people I knew in which I did take pity on who lost their job and subsequent possession because they couldn't find employment again. Then there were others who lost everything because they spent money they didn't have and lived like the good times were never going to end.

I understand what you are saying Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert as we are in a slowdown here with the slump in oil prices but when I think of the number of people who flocked here due to the recession it gave me hope to see people do what ever it took to find employment... even if it meant leaving their lifetime home and families... these people had the gumption to get off their butts, out of their pity parties, and move from beautiful climates like Florida to the harsh winter of ND. Those are the people that make America GREAT, not the ones who look for a handout because life isn't fair.

Bob - I have an interest in genealogy.  Sometimes when I'm watching those reality shows that feature families with lots of kids, I kind of laugh.

In the early 1800s, there was an ancestor in my family, who was a Methodist minister.  He had 7 children by his first wife, and when she died, he had 15 more by his second wife.  That's 22 kids total, and there was no electricity, no running water, no refrigeration, automatic washing machines, dryers, or dishwashers.  I can't even imagine what life must have been like.

That is a lot of kids Myrl Jeffcoat but I bet it was a great family to be part off. I would also guess that each of the 22 had their own chores and none of them were slackers.

Bob I've seen a lot of people pull out of the worst 'economic depression we've seen in the Phx area after loosing their homes, jobs and being forces to file BK. Every single one of the folks I"m referring to is now doing better than ever - because they took repsponsibility got out there and do whatever they needed to do to make things happen. We've helped many of them purchase a home again and it's a good feeling to work with people that understand the value of owing their home and what it takes to do again. This is a group of very proud home owners!

And they should be proud, they did it, not a government program Anna Banana Kruchten . Those are the folks that make me proud to be an American.
