One of the most overlooked historical sites in San Antonio is the Spanish Governors Palace. Other names that it has been known as are the Casa De Capitan, the Comanancia, and Presidio San Antonio de Bexar. But whatever you call this treasured old building it is a one of kind property. The National Geographic Society has dubbed it San Antonio's most beautiful building. And it is truly a lovely property. The Governor's Palance is a U- shaped one story building and includes 10 rooms plus a open courtyard.
The property was completed in 1749 and is an excellent example of 18th century Spanish colonial architecture and remains as one of the last visible examples of an 18th Spanish Colonial town house. Often referred to as Presidio San Antonio de Bexar. This Presidio was ordered by King Philip V of Spain to protect Spanish holdings in the new world primarily against French encrouchment. The Presidio served as both a residence and military headquarters for the Spanish authority in charge. It served to help protect the area's missions (including the mission well known as the Alamo). This National Historic site received a major refurbishment in the 1930's.
The Spanish Governor's Palace is open daily except for Mondays.
It is located at 105 Plaza De Armes just behind San Fernando Cathredral.
Visitors are encouraged to this overlooked San Antonio treasure.
