Austin Weirdness #3~Meet me at the "I love you so much" wall!

You have to love our slogan Keep Austin Weird . We have so many Austin traditions that bring a smile to your face. The “I love you so much” mural is an Austin staple that makes you grin no matter what your mood! Remember “a smile is a curve that sets everything straight”…Phyllis Diller.

Where is this famous wall? What’s its story? You can find it on South Congress on the north side of “Jo’s Coffee House” that opened in 1999. In 2010, local musician Amy Cook took a can of red spray paint and wrote a sweet and beautiful love letter to her partner Liz Lambert, majority owner at Jo’s on the side of the building. It simply stated “I love you so much.

The site went viral and everyone flocked to the wall to take photos with friends and lovers alike. Passing the time laughing and joking in long lines everyone waits patiently to jump up to the wall and smile, hug and capture a shot with the backdrop of “I love you so much!” Many times strangers offer to take your picture!

Jo’s regularly hosts fundraisers, concerts and other reasons to gather and this wall adds to the festivities. It became a place for all Austinities to gather and pronounce their love for all things great in Austin!

In January 2011 the public love letter was vandalized! Someone painted over it! Austinites were outraged because a much loved ritual was attacked. Several weeks later the couple restored the identifiable love note to its rightful spot.

“Don’t Mess with Texas” comes to mind as everyone watches over the bold statement of love on the north side of Jo’s. I wouldn’t want to see what would happen if someone tries to mess with this love letter again.

There you have it another Weirdism that makes Austin such a wonderful place to live! We thrive on many traditions (almost like rites of passages) that make us smile, happy and know we live in a very special place.

Dorie Dillard ~ hi Dorie... I'm sure as with any city, you really need to live there to fully experience it. I'm from NYC and people have all sorts of attitudes about what it's like to live in NYC, most of which are incorrect because they haven't actually lived there.

Good morning Dorie.  There is always someone out there who just can't leave well enough alone.  Having lived in Texas I agree, if that person gets caught by some of the locals it won't be a good outcome for them.
