Merchant Circle - Claim your FREE business web page

By

Being in Silicon Valley, we get access to a lot of website based services which evolve into powerhouses which change the way we do businesses.  Think about craigslist, google, ebay, etc.....

I went to a meeting last night to learn about a new site called Merchant Circle.  I don't proclaim to be the a tech maven, but this could be an awesome breakout tool for Realtors, or other small business owners for that matter, especially those who do not have a web presence, to get a foothold and control their web presence.  It started out in June of last year but already has nearly 90,000 merchants who claimed their pages already.   It is search engine optimized and it page ranked 7 on Google.  As the BusinessWeek article above mentioned, it is like Myspace for local businesses.

So what does it do?  Basically, it gives business owners a search engine optimized presence on the internet with easy to use tools to market themselves and manage their online reputation.   It pulls information from yellow pages and build the template for you FREE and all you have to do is claim it using your business phone number.

The number above is Merchant Circle's own phone number, but you enter your own and then follow the instructions.

If you do not advertise on the Yellow Pages, then you will create your own presence.  It takes a few more steps but you can do it easily like I did below.

There is a place for you to blog, a place to make online coupons, a place to create your own newsletters, and place to create your own bulletin board.  It is a one-stop-shop for online presence.  Did I mention all of this was FREE?  Go and claim your business web page.

I signed up about six months ago but I can't track any traffic to it.  Has it worked for anyone else?

Thanks,

I signed up about a month ago - another Realtor in town sent me the link.  can't say I've gotten any traffic yet, but it is a great one way link to my website.  Maybe I should spend some time here and add some more value and original content to the page and see what happens.

Good idea John, I didn't do anything with it since I set it up, kinda like some AR people with their profiles and no photo.  We gotta keep it alive.

You may seriously want to look into Merchant Circle before promoting it.  A quick search of Google shows a lot of negative publicity surrounding their business tactics. Read this article which contains links to actual infor provided by Merchant Circle detailing some of their shadier business practices:  http://www.sugarrae.com/blog/merchant-circle-can-kiss-my-consumer-ass/

It's worth noting that this company does nothing to promote to consumers, only to businesses.  The odds of someone finding your business through Merchant Circle are pretty non-existent.

Hi Jimmie,

I did not know about all of the negative publicity behind them.  Thanks for pointing it out to me.

My goal of getting the word out about them was to let people who do not really have a presence on the web get a foothold.  They provide a FREE webpage, and a way to link to your primary website, if you have one.  Merchant Circle's webpage is #7 when I google myself.  I have my own website, so the more ways for people to link to my webiste is my goal.  And Merchant Circle's webpage is on the first page of google.  That's all that matters to me.  I don't subsribe to any of their pay services.   So the controversy about whether it promotes to consumers or only to businesses is irrelevant to me.  And from the majority of responses above, people seem to think they derive some benefit at no cost to themselves.

I think if you need a boost on your google ranking for free, this is a great way just like ActiveRain, so use it.  If you are concerned about the controversy, then don't use it.  It's a matter of simple choice.
