Alameda Development and Architecture in the 1880’s

Alameda is rife with architectural heritage with more than 10,000 building built before 1940.  Until 1973 many stately Victorians and other charming architectural styles were demolished and replace by apartments.  In 1973 Measure A was passed which stopped the wholesale destruction of these treasures.  These homes have been also been protected by the City of Alameda Historical Advisory Board.

The buildings that Alameda is known for are called Victorians because they were built during her reign.  Victorians are known for their ornate style characterized by spindles, brackets and scroll work.  Alameda is not only the home of marvelous Victorians but boast many other styles such as craftsman, bungalows, art deco and storybooks homes.

Judith Lynch, a 10 year member of the Historical Advisory Board, teacher and co-author of “Victoria’s Legacy”, will present a six week course on the history of Victorians during the era of Victoria, beginning on June 21 at the Mastick Senior Center.  She will also discuss neighborhoods which flourished during the late 1800’s.

One of the highlights of the class is the discussion of “Architectural Forensics” in which Judith challengers her students to answer her question, “What did this building used to be?”

Alameda is a wonderful island community, with its tree lined streets, friendly neighborhoods, great schools and lovely architecture.  I write about senior issue in my Senior Living in Alameda blog.  If you would like more information about Alameda please call or text me at 510-504-5612 or visit my Facebook page Living in Alameda and 101 Things To Do in Alameda.

Evelyn Kennedy -  Wow!  When I take a look at your photo of the Alameda Victorian, all I can say is yeah for the measures taken in 1970 to save them. The detail and work that has gone into them is beyond impressive!  Anyone looking to buy, or sell a Victorian needs to call you for more information!  I can see you really appreciate them!
