Last week I had the privelege of singing at a benefit breakfast at the Spokane Club for the Starlight Starbright foundation. This wonderful foundation provides support, entertainment, education and recreation for families of critically ill children.
I have 5 of my own children, and they are all healthy and I can't imagine the stress of having a critically ill child. Years ago, I volunteered at Deaconess hospital for nealy 5 years providing music for children on monday mornings during clinci time. This experience was incredible, and at the time I got involved in the early stages of what is now the Ronald Mc Donald house here in Spokane. I actually did an entire benefit album for them back in 1986 which is on my web site in it's entirety. (www.BethAnnLong.com)
Not to skip around too much, but during that time in my life, I was diagnosed wit thyroid cancer, and I have a small experience with the difficulities of serious illness. But I have no idea what it means to fight for my life, let alone be a child fighting for my life.
There are so many wonderful opportunities for us to volunteer in our communities, and give back. Choosing ways to do this takes some thought, reflection, and wisdom. It is imortant to recognize the seasons of your life, and when it's the best time for you to invest time in the community. For example, I am the mother of FIVE including two sets of twins, when they were younger, well that was not the season for me.
I am excited to share that I have decided to join the leadership council for the Spokane area STARLIGHT STARBRIGHT FOUNDATION. I hope to be an asset and help them raise funds for this deserving charity. Entire families are touched by the Starlight Starbright foundation, and I am looking forward to being apart of this.
