Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend.

tool box

Said LORD POLONIUS to LAERTES in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I really need to learn to quit volunteering my tools out to friends... and yes exfriends.

Having always been know as "Timm the Toolman" (even before Tool Time) friends frequently ask (or I volunteer) to borrow my tools.

DrillI don't know why they even ask to "borrow", why not just say "Bob can I have your Drill until someone borrows it from me and never brings it back?". Or why not say "Bob, can I have your compound miter saw and I'll bring it back as a usless piece of junk when you remember who borrowed it?"

It happens every time yet I keep saying SURE, or even worse when I know someone could use something I say "Hey would you like to borrow my cement mixer?"

Geeze! What's the matter with me???

Someday I'm going to remember the rest of that quote... To thine ownself be true.

All of my yard tools - shovels, rakes, axes, etc. are commercial/industrial grade.  No "Home Depot" consumer stuff for me, thanks.   But I cannot afford to lose them... so, I spray them with several coats of red, blue, or yellow paint.

I paint the entire handle, the shovel blade or axe head, all of it.  My other "tools" like drills, even gas cans and propane cylinders have FRED written on them with permanent black marker.  When I visit a friend or acquaintance, and peep in their shed or garage, I can quickly spot my tools!

I borrowed a book from a friend once and was surprised when I essentially "checked it out" as if in a library.  He kept a record of what it was, who I was and when we discussed getting it back.

I suppose the same thing could be done with tools.

Great idea Fred Griffin

I know I just said yesterday I need to keep a record of who I loan stuff to. Just yesterday I received my gas power washer back after loaning it out last summer Dan Tabit

Bob maybe you could tag on - when can you have it back to me?  I used to do that with books and rarely ever saw them again.

I don't know why Anna Banana Kruchten but I loaned out my most prized book, an autographed copy, and never saw it again.

Hi Bob- We've gone through more hammers and other small tools just replacing the ones that were never returned.

I can relate Kathy Streib  but I even lose big things like extension ladders.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You may need to make an extra sale to cover your tools budget.

Have a most productive summer!

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm ,  You're not alone in that department.  I've neen known to loan things out, never to be seen again.

Not seeing them again may be better than seeing them come back as usless chunks of metal Larry Johnston . I can hope my missing ones have good loving homes.

Great Blog - this sounds exactly like Roger's Dad, who would loan out tools and items to family and neighbors, and then didn't remember who had what.  Sometimes he would get items back, but not always (and those were from his sons - HA!).  I feel your 'pain' Bob "RealMan" Timm - you are a generous soul!!  Though Fred Griffin has some excellent ideas about painting items and writing your name on them!!

Thanks Allie Angeloni , I don't think I have time to paint everything but I like the idea of putting my name on them and the library card idea.
