The back pack program originally started when a school nurse realized that many children were relying on their school lunches and not getting enough food on the weekends. The school started sending grocieries home in paper bags but the children were being picked on by the more fortunate kids. They got the idea of filling backpacks with the food so that the children would not be singled out.
Helping Hands is a non profit organization in Clark Fork Idaho run by Sue Chedester and along with their food program she has been spear heading the Back Pack program in Clark Fork Idaho. In a town of 500 people she currently has 82 children on the program. Monday they had a pleasant suprise when a Wal-mart truck pulled up full of milk, cookies, lunch items, ice cream, ceral to supplement the program. The children were allowed to pick their goodies for their back packs and it brought a tear to many eyes.
A big thank you to wal mart and to those of you that made anonymous donations to help a worth cause.
Items are not being collected for a 4th of July raffle to support a school supply program. So show your support and help where you can to give these kids the supplies they need to have a good school year. If you are interested in helping out call Sue at (208) 266-0306
