I'll admit it, of all the hat's I wear: Realtor, Father, Board of Directors at the Grand Rapids Association of Realtors, Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Brother, Uncle, Son (and this list could go on and on), the one I wear most proudly is the DAD HAT!

I cannot help myself!  Since they were born, my kids have delighted and amused me endlessly.  As they grew, I think I took their small defeats harder than they did.  I also reveled in their large and small successes. I was so relieved that as they became adults, we still liked each other, still enjoyed spending time together, being Kirstin & Dad in Budapestimportant in each other's lives.

But since May, 2006, my youngest has been living in Romania.  She's a Peace Corps Volunteer who teaches English to young Romanians. She knits regularly with a group of Romanian Grannies, does volunteer work in AIDS education and travels whenever the chance arrises.

Her hometown is Petrosani, a small coal mining town, where the mine has closed.  She has a studio apartment in an old Soviet Bloc type building.  Despite cold winter temps, there's no central heat and she's learned to cope with the absence of hot water for as long as a month.

But despite differences between the culture she grew up in, and life in Romania, she recently said that living with some of the hardships that are part of everyday life there, she's really glad to have experienced all of it.  I think it showed her how resiliant she is, how adaptable she can be, and has helped her to drill down to what is really important in her life.

She's one of my heros!  At 22-years of age, to go live on her own in a foreign country, in order to help make a difference in that country (and the world). WOW.  I cannot imagine that I would had that sort of selfless courage at that tender age, and may not have it even now.

She's added Romanian to her list of languages. She's been able to travel to Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia (to name a few).  When I visited last summer we spent time in Bucharest Romania, Budapest & Heviz in Hungary, and Vienna.  I was amazed to watch her adapt to each new country, to be able to navagate and help us navagate in the languages we encountered, to see my 'little girl' in a different, grown up context.

But that's all background. The reason for this post is to share with you how excited I am that her 27-months is rapidly coming to the end.  Before the summer is over, I'll be able to see her little face.  Enjoy a glass of wine with her, hear her stories and memories face to face.  I cannot tell you how much I've missed those things.  We talk whenever we want to, instant message regularly, occasionally SKYPE with webcams and yesterday I got a text message announcing that she had arrived in Bulgaria and was having a wonderful time.  But it's not the same as being together.

With so many options in front of her, I don't know that Kirstin has locked in on exactly what is next, but I'm guessing that it will be an interesting, exotic path. One that involves some sort of international humanitarian work, lots of travel and plenty of photos and fun.

For now, I'm not going to worry about any of that. I'm going to continue to check off the days until I'll see her coming across the concourse at Gerald R. Ford Airport in Grand Rapids, MI on July 30th.

Thanks for sharing such a heartwarming story. I'm here in CA, so this is my morning coffee hour. So nice to hear about your personal joy and your daughter's independence.

We are very proud to know her also and I have mentioned her to several of our friends as a great role model for other's to follow. I would be a proud DAD also.

Pam- Thanks for stopping by.  It will be interesting to see how Kirstin feels coming back to the US.  I'm guessing that much of what we take for granted each day will seem excessive, maybe even outrageous.  I guess time will tell.

Vickie- glad I brightened up your coffee time!

Terry- Thanks.  A very proud dad, as I know you are too, and justifiably so.

Eric, Many blessings to your daughter, to say she is resiliant is an understatement!  I'm thrilled that you'll be able to see her soon, it sounds like it's been quite a journey for both of you.

Hi Eric.  I also have a daughter named and spelled Kirstin.  How refreshing it is to read the love of a father for her daughter.  I'll be praying for Kirstin's safe return.  Many blessings to both of you.

Carole- Thanks.  Journeys are good.  Stretching out of our comfort zones are good!  Thanks for your nice comment.

Heidi- there's one for the small world society!  We appreciate the prayers very much.

Eric, I can't imagine my daughter or son being gone for so long. I'm sure you are looking forward to nice Kirstin's safe return. Nice ThemThem to her, thanks for sharing with the Group. She sounds like a wonderful, caring young lady, and proud, you should be!

Congrats to all you.  What an exciting adventure and one that will change her life forever.  I am sending this to my husband who works with Romanians everyday and has a great relationship with many people.

I am happy for all of you.

Eric, I'm glad you'll be getting to see your daughter again soon.

My 24-year-old daughter Laura lives and works in Munich, Germany and I miss her very much.

Eric: Seems we have a lot in common.  Just IM'd with Kirstin yesterday.  She's finalizing her plans and after Peace Corps, before she hits the USA, she's going to do a trip to Egypt.  A camel riding Eco-Tour, sleeping in tents and the whole thing.  I love the spirit of this young woman!

July 30... just before midnight, I'll be able to give my baby a hug.  What a wonderful thing that is to look forward to.

What a great experience for your daughter and what a difficult time for you to have her gone for so long.  I am starting the letting go process this year with my first graduating high school.  I cant imagine him moving so far away for more than 2 years but I know it may happen.  I wish Kristen luck in whatever field she decides to go into.  This experience will help her in so many ways.

Eric, history repeats itself.

I went overseas, right out of my junior year at Indiana University, to work with the Israel Radio Orchestra in Jerusalem.  And a little over thirty years later, my Laura decided to work overseas in Germany.

I envy you the fact that you'll be able to hug your daughter in just a few weeks.

RJ, Thanks for stopping by.  When I think back to my son's (Jared) senior year, I was certain that I'd not know what to do as he was not around.  But it all worked out perfectly.   Kids today are a totally different group... they realize that they can go anywhere and do anything.  I'm just so pleased that mine want to make a difference, and are following their hearts, rather than looking only at their wallets... and getting into the rat-race.

Eric: then you were an adventurer too.  Good for you.  That had to be a life changing/life defining time for you.  It's funny, I never have a day that I don't wonder several times.. 'what's Kirstin up to today?" or "it's midnight in Romania, I bet she's having sweet dreams".  Our parrot still calls her for dinner, almost every night since she's been gone.  "KIRSTIN DEENNNER" and I'll say, "Izzy, Kirsin's not here.." and generally get "OK" and a minute later "Kirstin Deenner' and we start again.

Eric, I guess dads think pretty much alike.

My parents weren't happy when I went overseas to work.  I used to call them from the post office in Jerusalem and my mom would spend the entire time crying.  Then my dad would get on the phone and say, "look what you're doing to your mother..come home now".  Talk about guilt..

Like you, I get reminded of my absentee daughter every day.  Fortunately my younger daughter Eve lives in the Cities, so I have one of my kids nearby.

Eric, this is such good news for both of you, think of all the stories she will have to tell!  I can't wait to see the pics from the camel trip....whoohoo.  What an adventuress lass she is, and a really good person, you and Karen did a good job.
