Blogging Begins with a Single Thought!

This blogging thing was all new to me 6 years ago when I first started posting on Active Rain. Yes, for me, it does begin with a single thought or idea on what I plan to blog about. Thoughts would come and go, and I would have to start writing them down to remember, especially when a catchy title would pop up in my mind.

Blogging with a Single ThoughtI started with things I knew, like local events, military activities, or things of interests for other veterans. The market reports and neighborhood reports came later after I saw what other members in the Rain were saying about their markets and communities. Sometimes it pays to be very observant of what others are doing and saying. That's what I have come to love about being a member in Active Rain.

You get to share and to learn from other professionals in our AR community. Back to that single thought or idea. Once I had written my ideas down, I would begin to write out a post. Sometimes it would only take a half hour depending on the topic that I choose to write about. But other times it would take days or weeks, and my post would stay in the draft mode longer.

I have learned that whenever you write about something of interest for others to read, you get a lot of comments and activity from the general public. Your phone line will start to ring about some of the items you have written about. It may be someone requesting your services, or someone just wanting more information on the items that you posted.

When you write interesting and quality content, it gets noticed by your peers, and the general public too. Folks love to read about our experiences, or stories that we share from to time to time. It helps others relate to the us. We all love to be approachable, and needed for the services we can provide to our communities and market areas.

Therefore, write down those thoughts or ideas, and turn them into a post to blog about. Everything you write doesn't have to be about business. You can write "Just For Fun", and I am sure many of you will as you begin to enjoy blogging as much as I do. How long did it take me to write this post? About 30 to 40 minutes this morning.  My blogging begins with only a single thought!

Jerry Newman very well said - you just need that one single idea - that I get from some posts, some questions.

And yes, I do have a list of topics for new blog posts - wish I had few extra hours in a day, just to dedicate to ActiveRain...

Hi Praful Thakkar I could use a few more hours in the day too to write my posts for Active Rain. It does take time to develop quality content.

I think the best thing to do is write down those thoughts for future reference but I have found that the longer you don't act on those thoughts - the less likely they turn out to be a post.

Great point to remember, Lyn. Taking quick actions to develop your thoughts in highly recommended. I have found that I can write more whenever it's fresh on my mind.

You're absolutely correct - a small thought can be turned into a post. For me, those thoughts can swim around in my head for quite a while before they're ready to be turned into something readable.

Hi Jerry

I really enjoyed this read as you talked about getting started in blogging and how you've handled blogging ideas, plus trying to focus on one main idea, which could be minor or quite significant.

I have kept a list of ideas for posts as long as I can remember, although every now and then a brilliant idea - at least I think so - hits me and I am not in a place to write it down, and I forget. I have done some Notes with Siri which helps. Some things just never become posts for a variety of reasons. Hhey are probably crappy ideas.

No, Jeff. I am sure you've had some great ideas. It just takes times to remember to write them out and complete those posts. I got into the habit of entering my thoughts into Evernote, so I can come back and finish writing a post.

People do business with people they know, like and trust.  So, blog posts can focus on those areas.  I do research on Google to find out what topics readers are searching for and use those primary keywords and long-tail keywords for my blog articles.  As an instructor, I write mostly educational articles to show my subject matter expertise.

Writing articles about personal interests, hobbies, pastimes, sports, community activities, etc. can help potential customers learn more about the person, appealing to emotions and maybe common interests.  But posts expressing strong or unpopular opinions on politics or religion may drive away people with different views.

This is so true, Jerry. Knowing what folks are searching on Google will certainly help you write those posts that have a lot of interest to the general public. I try to stay away from writing anything that will drive folks away from my blog.

Very true and great post.  While I'm in CE classes I write a "b" "c" or "F" next to comments as to where to share.  B is for blog, C is for one of my own CE classes, and F is for facebook.  Works like a charm!

Sounds like you have a nice system, Jan. I might give that a try too. Knowing what to post and where to post important.
