A New Pro-Housing Generation - YIMBY not NIMBY

By
Real Estate Agent with Compass CA DRE# 01215160

Most of us are familiar with the acronym NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard.) Today I came across the term YIMBY - (Yes In My Back Yard.)

The Rockwell condos under constructionThe San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR), wrote a fascinating piece, "A New Pro-Housing Generation Says Yes In My Back Yard." If you live in an urban area, you'll find the shift from NIMBY-ism to YIMBY-ism intriguing.

If you live in a high-cost city like Seattle WA, Portland OR, Washington DC, Los Angeles CA, Denver CO, New York City NC, or the San Francisco Bay Area, you'll find reading this piece worth your time. And if you live in a more rural area, it's a great way to see how thoughts are starting to shift, change is beginning to happen.

I'd love to hear your thoughts after you read the article "A New Pro-Housing Generation Says Yes In My Back Yard."

Interesting. Maybe those on the fence will start a new acronym, MIMBY, the maybes.

I wasn't aware of just how many cities and urban areas are feeling the acute lack of housing--it's not just San Francisco, that's for sure. SPUR is an interesting group.

I had not heard of YIMBY so this was an interesting read for me. Our little town is dealing with whether to grant a height and density variance on a new construction project. It is the YIMBYs vs. the NIMBYs...will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I think most people really want to improve their neighborhoods and like the article says, just because a neighborhood is great doesn't mean it can't be improved. I suffer from the rundown syndrome. Every time I drive by a rundown, neglected house, I feel an urge to buy it and fix it up and restore it to its glory. Fortunately, that urge goes away by dinner time.

Lottie Kendall - The harder it becomes to get affordable housing the more we're going to see things shift, change, and see new ideas come to market to meet the needs of a growing group. It may not happen, but definitely there's a need so we'll get more ideas!

Hi Laura Allen, Lake Tahoe - Truckee Real Estate for Sale www.TahoeLauraLuxuryHomes.com - I find the ideas for change exciting, although tumultuous. Lack of housing in our cities is an issue that needs resolving.

Hello, Diana Zaccaro - I think what your town is experiencing might be the start. When lack of inventory becomes acute, YIMBYism overtakes NIMBYism - at least that's what's happening in the San Francisco area and in other cities.

Happy 4th!

Our whole area has a shortage of housing and our Vibrant Downtown Committee has revamped several second and third story buildings into downtown living. We need more and they are working on it.  Every unit that has come up for rent has rented immediately and the ones for sale, sold.
