One of the things I like best about my community of Big Canoe in the North Georgia mountains is that although it is a gated community, it has a small town atmosphere and we have celebrations just like small towns do. This weekend has seen many annual events that our whole community enjoys and looks forward to.

Weekend Events

Here is a sampling of what went on here in Big Canoe over the Fourth of July weekend:

Concert at The Terraces

Saturday, July 2nd at 7:30 there was a wonderful concert at the Terraces venue. The Soul Purpose Band played soul and Motown music and concert goers had a ball dancing into the night.

Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk

Sunday July 3rd: Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk which is an annual event starting at 9 am with routes that follow trails in the Wildcat recreation area at Big Canoe. Individuals as well as families participated.

North Georgia Chorus at Big Canoe Chapel

Sunday July 3rd: The 9:00 am and 10:30 am services at the Big Canoe Chapel were combined into one at 10:30 am and it was so crowded it was standing room only at the back of the church. The North Georgia Veteran's Chorus, composed of approximately 20 men performed a wonderful rendition of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. There was a Multi- media screen behind them showing various parts of the United States and scenes of our flag flying high, which was a wonderful addition to the music. The performance was so well received that the Chorus was given a standing ovation.

Big Canoe Family Day

Big Canoe Family Day

Monday, July 4th Family Day: The best day of the Fourth of July weekend is always the actual Fourth of July. Starting off at 9:00 am there is a dog parade, and then bike parade, for children. There were some pretty adorable dogs in the parade, and some creative owners who dressed their canine companions to the nines. And the bike parade was so sweet. The parade was broken up into age categories and who can resist sweet children dressed in the red, white and blue waving to the crowd as they ride by on decorated bikes?

Family Day continued with a celebration on the Wildcat Recreation Area play field. There were two bounce houses, a water slide that actually ended with a dunk in the water, face painting, a banner with red, white and blue props to get your picture taken at (first picture above), Spin Art, Skee Ball, and a chance to visit with the cats and dogs being housed by Big Canoe Animal Rescue, in the hopes that a lucky dog or cat might find their forever home today! Refreshments were available for a charge but most of the other events I listed were free of charge.

Fireworks

And of course what is a Fourth of July Celebration without fireworks? The fireworks are set off above Lake Petit at 9:30 pm every Fourth of July but a drive by the ball field at 10:30 am this morning revealed a dozen chairs already set up! By tonight the whole area will be packed with families, ready to enjoy a fireworks extravaganza. A few fortunate families that live by Lake Petit will be able to see them at home from their back decks.

One of the nice things about living in Big Canoe is that people who live higher up on the mountains are able to enjoy fireworks in other towns in just that way. Last night we were treated to two different shows in faraway towns from our back deck because the area in which we live is high on a ridge.

Big Canoe is a wonderful place to live year round, but it is especially festive on the Fourth of July weekend. I hope you all have had a wonderful time  this weekend celebrating this wonderful country of ours!
