Dinosaur Bones On the Ranch in Oklahoma?

One of the joys of owning your own piece of real estate comes from things you find.  Sometimes its a find in the backyard.  A friend of mine found coins from the revolutionary war days on his property in south Jersey.

Our friends, the Colonel and his Darlin', were walking the limestone bed of one of the creeks that runs through their ranch in southeastern Oklahoma when one of them spied this "rock" in the creekbed.

It weighs about ten pounds.

To my untrained eye, it sure looks like bone.  If so, it would be the same age as the Ammonites we found there a couple of weeks ago.

Check your fossil record.  There were no mammals walking the earth at that time.  Only reptiles.  Really, really BIG reptiles.

A neighbor here in Tucson was digging a trench in his back yard, and found a magnificent geode.

What treasures have you found in your back yard?

I'm afraid my backyard is full of rotting stumps that were buried when the subdivision was put in many years ago. My husband sunk down to his knee this week out behind the garage!

I'm afraid I haven't found any treasures (unless you count the gofer) in my backyard.  When we were young we found all kinds of treasures, a lot of them were alive!

We found the chasis of an ice cream truck in our backyard buried in about 1/4 acre of overgrown blackberry bushes.  We had to haul it off to the dump.

That's quite a find, Mike.  I think the only thing I've found in our backyard is a bunch of hungry birds and squirrels.  They do keep us entertained though.

Mike - I can't say I am about to go digging in my backyard. But the only treasures I find on occasion is Taco and Bella's petrified dog dung! (sorry, it was the first thought that came to my mind, LOL)

Sounds like a great find. Call out the archaeological wizards. I found a ladies Timex watch in a vole hole in my backyard that looks like it had been buried since Mamie Eisenhower was in the White House. It still ticks. John Cameron Swayzee (the Timex man) would be proud. :-) Good post, Mike.

David,

"Takes a lickin' and keeps on ticking!"  I haven't thought of that commercial line since I don't know when! Here in the southwest, pack rats find shiny objects and take them down in their nests.  Because of the very dry climate, they last a long time without significant deterioration.

Susie,

You are too kind!  Thanks for reading and commenting.

Candace,

You'd be surprised how quickly modern petrification can take place!  That would be Taco and Bella's dog copralite.  LOL

Jesse,

Keep 'em fed!  LOL

Fran,

Did the Ice Cream Man's bell still work?  That's a fun find (but not for you, I guess...)

Doreen,

I'll bet you Mom didn't think they were treasures! As little kids, we brought all sorts of critters home too.

Joan,

A rotted stump is a great place to go exploring with a metal detector.  You're likely to find old lead shot from flintlock rifles.  I think you can rent a metal detector.

Thanks for being the first to comment.

The best we have are a few arrow heads in our back yard and it has been a few years since I have gone looking of buried treasure. I might be fun to be a kid again and enjoy the simple pleasures. Thanks for sharing.

Just amazing. I have found Indian grinding stones at my old home in CA, nothing in VA yet...

My yard is still pretty much a swap land from the storms. I was finally able to get 2 areas of yard mowed after the grass and grown to about 6 inches. Oh, and I found some poison ivy too.

Barbara Jo,

It really is, isn't it?

Susan,

That poison ivy isn't worth much on eBay.  LOL  Thanks for commenting.

Charles,

I'll bet you still have that old grinding stone, though.

Terry,

Arrowheads are treasures!

Mike, I live in Texas and have found a number of neat things like in the river bed which is solid rock bottom located in our backyard.  I found about 10 dinosaur tracks and on another place a rock only about 24 x24 inches with 2 different dinosaur tracks.  This one was loose and I was able to bring it into my garage, one of the tracks is of the bird type dinosaur.  We have found a lot of bones some mastodon tusk. We have found a lot of indian artifacts.
