My girls!

It was 1991. My second daughter Rachel was just born and my eldest - Lauren - had just turned two. I had gotten over that terrible feeling you have when your second baby is about to arrive. You know - the "how can I possibly love another child the way I love my first child and therefore I must be a horrible person because why would I bring a baby into the world who would not have as much love as the first one" If you have more than one kid you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

Anyway - life was wonderful and the new Steve Martin movie was about to come out. I LOVE Steve Martin and so when I heard that "Father of the Bride" was on its way, I was really looking forward to it.

But you see something happened that I just wasn't ready for. It made me cry. I mean I was bawling like my new born baby. It REALLY caught me by surprise too because of course I was expecting to laugh! OK - I did plenty of that too - especially at "Fronk". My emotions were not helped by the fact that the "bride" in question, looks remarkably like Lauren!

Anyway, for some reason this movie made me realize that one day my baby girls would grow up and then some guy who would not be nearly good enough for either one of them would find a way to steal their hearts and take them away from me.

My daughters and I have a pact now. The night before they get married, we will sit down - just the two of us - and watch Father of the Bride. Then, and only then, will they realize that my feelings and emotions are mixed. Either way, they will both know that they will always be "My Girl".

First of all - The Temptations!

And THIS is the scene that REALLY got me!

And of course - The Wedding!

Yes, they do grow up fast.  I should watch this movie again.  Thanks for the reminder.

Simon, that was a great movie. I always wanted a girl but we had one son. God absolutely knew what HE was doing because my husband would have been HORRIBLE on any boy coming around. He would have been Steve Martin's character x20!

Got to dig that movie out and watch again.

LOVE THE MUSIC!

Kathy - trust me, I am Steve Martin X 50 when the young men come calling!

That's a very sweet post.  Having kids sure does make us cry easier at the movies, doesn't it?  Rhiannon thinks I'm nuts, but one day she'll know how it feels.  : )

Thank you Chris. I cry at movies all the time - just not usually comedies!

My Baby girl turns 27 next week - my son turns 29 tomorrow. Seems like just yesterday doesn't it. Some movies just hit closer to home - Father of the Bride being one of them, the original Vacation being another.

Simon, Our 23 year old got engaged about 6 weeks ago.  I'm still in shock.  Feels like someone is stealing my baby.

The idea of my girls all grown up and some jerk suitor taking her as his bride...(sniffle, sniffle)

Gene - 27! Man! When mine get to be 27 they'll be eight years away from being allowed to date!

Brian - I don't even want to think about it. Congratulations I guess. I feel for you brother!

Joey - I was a journalist in the UK for more than 20 years. I know how to hit a deadline! :)

This is so sweet Simon. Your wife and children are very lucky people. God gives us enough love in our heart to share with the world. You can even love children that aren't from your downline! You have a big heart. I'm sorry you had to feel that way. It didn't take long to shake you out of that did it? Later in the rain~Deb

It is hard to watch your babies grow up, but it is a wonderful thing when they still call you Dad with affection and friendship.

Deb - shake me out of it?? Are you nuts?? *lol* My eldest is curently dating a guy called Jack (my dad's name) who looks like me! I'm freakin scared out of my mind!

Nick - uh huh....

Simon, If her boyfriend has your Dads name and looks like you, what's so scary about that? Heehee. You know they say that boys almost always marry a girl that resembles their mom. Now, what you have to do is get a good look at this fellows mother. Then you'll know whether you should be really freakin scared or not.

Simon, Great post, but you left me balling like a baby too! It's been years since I have seen this movie, I will have to watch it again. I have three kids and the oldest two are boys, I have a Karly that is the same age as your daughter...it will be a magical day I am sure! Thanks for the wonderful feeling this morning.
