I've been looking for a subje ct that I can write about on a regular bases. Easy enough answer, Tech Support Tickets!

One of the main questions I get asked at the support desk is how can you change your username. You cannot change your username, but I can change it for you.

Here are some easy tips for when you send in a ticket like this:

  1. Make sure you give me your current username. If you are not logged into ActiveRain when you send in this ticket, I will not know what your current username is. So just in case, let me know what your username is.
  2. Have a NEW username already picked out. To see if the username is available, put http://activerain.com/(username) into your browser, and change "(username)" to the username you want to use. If you get someone's profile then the username is in use, and you need to pick another one.
  3. A username cannot have capital letters, or spaces.
  4. Make sure that the username I have changed it to is spelled right. I copy and paste exactly what you tell me you want as your username, so it is up to you to make sure that it is spelled correctly.
  5. Log into your account after you receive my e-mail saying your username has been changed.
  6. Write your new username down somewhere. Some good places are a piece of paper on your desk, in a Word Document on your computer, an old shoe, business card or even your spouses forehead...I'm kidding!!

After I have changed your username, I will let you know. So there will be no need to keep e-mailing asking if it has been done :)

Keep watching for more blog entries from this series!

Monika-Maybe sometime in the future :)

Tom-Actually the goal is to make LESS work for myself. The blogs in this series will be linked to the "Contact Us" page, and so a person can e-mail me exactly what they want, without a lot of e-mailing back and forth.

Sean-haha Please don't attempt to piss people off on purpose :) Make Rich's job easier.

Nicole, This is the pinkest blog I have ever seen!!!! I think doing a series on the ticket request is a very smart idea.

I have a question for ya: How do you change the toilet paper over at The Lovely Wife's Crap-O-Rama Blog?

05/02/2008 07:00 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

Nicole...

Just in case you are on a 'need to know' basis...

We use Charmin :)

On another note...

What's the matter? Don't you like answering 100's upon 100's of tickets? :)

TLW-You crack me up :) Oh no, I ENJOY answering ticket after ticket, just making it easier for members to get their username's changed :) Also, if you can't login tomorrow, try the username "crap" :)

05/02/2008 07:18 PM by Nicole Rae (ActiveRain Corp.)

Nicole... I used the "contact activerain" below to send you a request to change my username.. it came back letting me know activerain thought it was spam.  I tried to correct it, but at this point don't know if it went through.  I'll wait a few days and try again, I guess.

05/02/2008 07:21 PM by Valerie Osterhoudt (Johnson Real Estate, Inc.)

Valerie-We have  spam protector on the helpdesk. It more then likely went through, if you don't hear from me by Sunday or Monday (I take Saturday's off to spend it with my family) then feel free to e-mail me directly at nicole@activerain.com

05/02/2008 07:24 PM by Nicole Rae (ActiveRain Corp.)

Nicole, WOW... you respond so quickly.. thanks.  I'll wait until Monday if I don't hear from you.  Enjoy Saturday with your family.  What little I have seen.. you deserve it.

And you did just that for me recently! ... from a boring encapsulation of my name to 'OrlandoforSale'.

Thanks Nicole!

Gosh, and I mailed Bob a check to do this for me a few months ago! :)

05/02/2008 08:01 PM by Michelle DeRepentigny, *Associate Broker/Broker * Athens, GA (ERA Classic City Realty)

Thank you for posting this! I have wanted to change my username. One additional question that I have is: Is there a way to merge the new user name with the old one?

I ask because some blog readers may have the old user name - and if it's changed, they may not be able to find the blog.

Thanks!

05/02/2008 08:25 PM by Darleen McCullen, Broker-Raleigh, NC Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty - www.darleenmc.com)

Michelle-Don't believe anything that comes out of Bob's mouth! :)

Darleen-I believe that there is not a way to do that at this moment, though that is a good suggestions!

05/02/2008 08:33 PM by Nicole Rae (ActiveRain Corp.)

Niclole.....thanks for the post and informaiton.  It sounds as if you change your screen name you loose your posts and points.

05/02/2008 08:58 PM by Pam Winterbauer ~ 2006 REALTOR® of the Year (Windermere Welcome Home)

Pam-You do not lose your posts or points if you change your username. :)

05/02/2008 09:03 PM by Nicole Rae (ActiveRain Corp.)

I didn't know that you could change it for us. That is great.

05/02/2008 09:50 PM by Shaun Wren (Western & Southern Life)

Good to know Nicole. I bet you keep busy. Keep up the good work.

05/02/2008 10:24 PM by Tigard Oregon Real Estate >> Wayne B. Pruner, GRI (Oregon First)

YOU ROCK!!!! You have no idea how much this has been bothering me!  I didn't know the username I was going to pick would be part of my URL so I chose something generic!  I will be sumitting a TICKET ASAP!!!

BTW - I echo what monika said.  It would be great to merge two blogs, having the ability to blog in one blog to consumers and in another to real estate professionals.

05/02/2008 11:44 PM by Bo Buchanan-Blue60.com Directory For Real Estate Pro's (Blue60.com)

What happens to the people who have subscribed to your blog when you change your username?  Will they stay subscribed - or will I need to contact them telling them what the new username is?   Also - what happens to your posts that are bookmarked -will the bookmarks other people have still work?

05/03/2008 12:07 AM by Bo Buchanan-Blue60.com Directory For Real Estate Pro's (Blue60.com)

Nicole - two words: user name  YOU ROCK!  If only everyone knew how much you keep the "rain" coming down!!

05/03/2008 12:13 AM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Wow, I didn't know that was possible!  Very cool stuff Nicole!  I think this is way cooler than Brad's how to video posts :P

05/03/2008 12:24 AM by Jeremy Blanton- Myrtle Beach Real Estate (Coldwell Banker Chicora Real Estate)

This is really good stuff, I have been stuck with my log in name and did not know about contacting support. You wil be hearing from me in the next couple of days. THANKS!! for the information.

05/03/2008 01:09 AM by Robert Arnold, Lake Livingston Real Estate (Brooks Prime Properties)

I don't have anything to say, but I am going to go see if TLW is crap now.  LOL

05/03/2008 02:43 AM by Phoenix Arizona Real Estate ~ Doreen McPherson (Keller Williams Arizona Realty ~ Scottsdale ~ Tempe)

Hi Nicole,

When you change a user name will it change automatically throughout the entire system?  Will internal links to it be broken?   It's pretty much a given that any external links coming in to the current name will be broken since the system cant reach outside to change them.  Won't this affect backlinks and SEO?

05/03/2008 03:37 AM by Laurie Manny, Long Beach CA Real Estate (Main Street Realtors Long Beach California)

Nicole,

I know ...too much information but I use two ply at home and 4 ply when I post crap:) I hope those types of links can't be broken or you'll a real mess on your hands.

05/03/2008 07:18 AM by Neal Bloom-Realtor ® Assoc.-CRS-Weston FL (RE/MAX Premier Associates)

Thank you I have not thought about changing my user name but if I do I will have this post bookmarked.  Have a great day.

05/03/2008 07:24 AM by Lorinda Ward (Acworth Georgia Realtor)

As I was reading through the comments I had a serious question, and as I can see, Laurie asked it.   So how will that affect your backlinks and SEO?

05/03/2008 08:53 AM by Western New York Home Sales | Colleen Kulikowski (Hunt Real Estate ERA)

I was told by someone from AR a few months ago it was not possible. Thanks for making the change for those of us that started out with a bad username.

05/03/2008 08:55 AM by Shawn Gerhardson Minnesota's Preferred Mortgage Lender (Mortgages Unlimited)

Nicole- I love it all...except for writing the username down "on a piece of paper on my desk"......I would trust you to not lose it with thousands of tickets better than to trust it on my desk ......LOL :)  I like your new topic....are you going to do this once a week, and if so what day?pulasan

05/03/2008 09:09 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Awesome! I knew it couldn't be changed...but now you tell me there is a way! I will eagerly look for more similar posts in your series.

05/03/2008 09:47 AM by Vickie Nagy, Realtor, Specializing in San Ramon, Danville & the Tri-Valley! (Empire Realty Associates)

I am totally going to change my username, but I'll wait because I think that your going to busy changing everyone elses for a while.

05/03/2008 11:36 AM by Ryan Vivo, Realtor Solano County Gateway Realty (Gateway Realty)

Bo-Thanks so much! I hope that this has cleared this up! They should stay subscribed.

Brad-Haha! Thanks!

Jeremy-You flatter me :D

Colleen-I believe that it will take a few days to upload. I would give it from three to four days to about a week. That's what it seems to be the timeline to me.

Shawn-Who told you you couldn't change your username?

Kathy-I can't keep track of over 86 thousand usernames :) But you'd be surprised how many people do not write it down and forget it, and THEN I get another ticket about it. This series will be at least once a week. Next one should be out on Monday.

Ryan-Oh probably :) I haven't look today. Today's my day off.

05/03/2008 12:58 PM by Nicole Rae (ActiveRain Corp.)

LOL Nicole...

I didn't sign out. I seem to be okay...If not, I guess I know who to blame for that :)

And of course I'll have to shoot out a ticket to bitch...And then shoot out another ticket to follow up on the original ticket and then shoot out another ticket to follow up on the two I have already shot out. Then shoot out another one just cause I feel your time line should be on my schedule...not yours :)

P.S. I got 25 points for that nonsense :)

TLW...ROAR!

05/03/2008 03:10 PM by "The Lovely Wife"...Broker Bryant's Wife... (Co-Owner Tutas Towne Realty, Inc.)

Hello Nicole,

Thank you for an excllent posting.

Before I change my username please let me know if there is any advantages or restrictions to having two or more profiles.  For example one for my company and one for me personally as an agent.
