2 Comments on ORV Beach Access Settlement Signed By Judge, Battle Rages On!!
Matt...I read about this earlier this morning on Frank & Frans website...I've been following it for some time myself as I come down there every year in September for the beach aand surf fishing...I have a hard time with the possibility of total closure of the beaches to both walk-on and vehicles and don't understand that thinking...Are your Senators and Representatives aware of the financial ramifications to the island?...What will this do to property values?...Oceanfront fall in value and soundfront increase?
Ernie,
Our local government plus our Representatives have been fighting this thing since day one and they are well aware of what would become of Hatteras & Ocracoke Island if they totally shut down the beaches. Can you say GHOST TOWN!! If it came to total closure then every property and business would become virtually worthless. If the tourists don't come down to rent these homes then there is no money to sustain the locals plus who wants to own a beach house where you can't go to the beach. I guess the value would hold up better on the soundside but I can imagine the value of everything else would drop substantially.
The Dare County Commissioner did make a statement today that the environmentalist are better funded than the local group that is trying to fight this. He went on to say that Toyota gave the Audubon Society, which is one of the groups that is trying to close the beaches, $2 MILLION last year. The other thing is many people who have been at the hearings and the meetings feel like that once the environmentalist start to win these cases they will just keep going to other areas of the beach not just here but all over the country. This decision is not only huge for the Outer Banks area but for all the locations where these birds nest.
Again many locals feel like something should be done to protect these birds but at the same time protect the rights of everyone to enjoy the beaches as well.
