How to Choose a Storage Facility

There comes a time when your home may seem like its about to bust at the seams!
Don't panic, this guide will help you pick out a storage facility so you can clean out the clutter and enjoy some more space in your home.

If you are not in a position to buyer a larger home, you are in the process of selling your home, you had to downsize, or you are renting (we can help you get out of that), a storage unit may be a great solution for you.

First - Determine what size of storage unit you need.
Go through an inventory your items so you can get an idea of how much space you need.
Also, if you have any delicate items or you are planning on storing for a longer period of time consider a space that has climate control.

Second - Decide how much hassle you are willing to deal with.
Do you need 24/7 accessibility?
If you are willing to deal with hassle then maybe location does not matter. Usually we recommend finding something close to your home so you aren't too upset if you have to go to the unit to pick some stuff up or drop some stuff off.
Determine if your schedule will work with their hours. You don't want to get stuck having to take time off from work just to go into the unit.

Third - Cleanliness & Staff
Make sure your comfortable with the unit. If the staff is rude and you are sensitive, it may not be a good fit. Also, check out the condition of the facility.
Is there a lot of ware and tear which could result in damages to your items? Are the units clean or crawling with little bugs? Just look around!

Last but not least - Security!
Make sure that the unit has good security. Unfortunately things do get stolen from storage facilities so it's important to take this one seriously.
Make sure the area has surveillance cameras that record 24/7. Keep in mind that if you see a camera it doesn't mean it's actually recording  so be sure to ask.
Also make sure the facility is fenced and gated. This will prevent unwanted guests entering the facility so puts your items at a lower risk.

We would also recommend making sure there are security guards if you are storing anything expensive.

We hope these tips help!

Good advice, Erik.

I would only add, "Do you really need this stuff?  Are you sure you will have a place to put it later?"   I wrote a blog some time ago about a family that paid for storage for several years, only to finally abandon the stuff.  What a waste of money.
