On The Importance of Compromise

Compromise Is Important in Real Estate

Despite the timing, this post has nothing to do with politics.

It is about real estate.

But, let’s start with the basics.  From Merriam-Webster comes this simple definition of compromise:

  • a way of reaching agreement in which each person or group gives up something that was wanted in order to end an argument or dispute

  • Something that combines qualities of two different things

  • A change that makes something worse and that is not done for a good reason

Yikes, that’s the simple definition?  Number three sounds downright horrible.   Number one is better and two sounds pretty good. Let me continue on this road of discovery....

I love a good quote and found these on compromise --- believe me I had to sift through a lot to find these:

They say it is better to be poor and happy than rich and miserable, but how about a compromise like moderately rich and just moody?

Princess Diana

Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got.

Janis Joplin

A lean compromise is better than a fat lawsuit.

George Herbert

Compromise in Real Estate

Okay, I might be getting a little closer.  Some humor always help but I’m still not quite feeling warm and fuzzy with compromise.   How about you?

But let’s face it.  It’s something we need to expect when working with buyers(and sellers) too in real estate.

The element of compromise is a part of real estate.  That word -- spoken or not -- is a part of the transaction.

My suggestion -- get used to it.  Don’t give up on the things that are so important but be realistic about the outcome.   Or maybe I need to use a another word....Suggestions?

Just about to send an email to an agent....offer over asking, rent back option to meet sellers' building completion....etc. etc...and gee golly whiz...the inspection time is not to their liking...compromise means both sides cooperate...something forgotten sometimes...

Great repost, Barbara. I follow Michael, but missed this one. So thanks. I always tell my clients that everyone compromises in a negotiation and that (1) the important thing is to know what you are willing to compromise and what's a non-negotiable up-front and (2) that the sign of a good negotiation and the right kind of compromises is everyone walking away from the table feeling like a winner.

I have often said the easy part of the sale is getting an offer...then the real work starts... Compromises are what closes the sale.

An asking price is an invitation to negotiate, as Nina Hollander said, you need to know up front what you are willing to compromise on. Great reblog Barbara!
